First the bad. Above is a picture of an older Mercury Sable. In order to improve the car, the owner has not only put on some ridiculous rims that raise the sedan several inches off the ground, giving the wheels an oversized look, but worst of all he added these dumb faux air vents to the side.

I've seen the "air vents" on several cars and they look like you just stick them on after peeling off the paper to reveal the adhesive layer. The effect is even worse when they aren't lined up properly. These aren't exactly following the lines of the car.

The dumbest thing is that the air vents (or vintiports) were long a signature of Buicks. Why would any "fly guy" want his car to look like a Buick?

The good is Phineas and Ferb on the Disney Channel. The show is clever and has lots of good reoccurring in-jokes that make it fun to watch. I think the best parts are with Dr. Dufenschmertz, the evil mad scientist who is always foiled by the boys pet, Perry the Platapus.

There's nothing else work watching on the disney channel, but I do enjoy this.

Recently there was a news story reporting the results of a study that said children preferred food that was "from McDonald's" over the same food presented to them without the McDonald's packaging.

The study is trying to prove that preschoolers are seeing too much advertising and are influenced more by such ads. while sure, McDonald's does do a lot of work targeting their brand to children, I have to say that this is not all McDonald's fault.

For one, the news report doesn't say that the kids necessarily could pick out the McDonald's packaging, or what made the packaging distinctly Mcdonald's so they could tell the branding over any other brand. Did they really see the golden arches logo as being what they recalled was from McDonald's, or was the packaging just more distinctive than that of the generic food?

The story said they were exposed to McDonald's packaging and "unbranded", but colorful packaging. Had they used packaging from Burger King or Wendy's, would the kids have made different choices? It's hard to tell if it's just that the kids liked the packaging of McDonald's more, or did they really understand the brand?

My real culprit is not McDonald's itself, but the children's parents. Television can only do so much to reenforce a brand, and sure, Mcdonald's has been using Ronald and McDonaldland commercials for years, and used Happy Meals to get children excited about a vist, but think about this, it's parents who often use a trip to McDonalds as a reward. Parents use it as a threat as well. If the child doesn't behave, they won't get a Happy Meal. With McDonalds food having so much power in a young person's life, how could a kid not get a certain feeling that McDonald's must be better?

I know when i was a kid it was a big deal to go to McDonalds. Still, when I was a kid I never lived in a city where there was a McDonald's within 30 miles. I remember when my dad said we were going to move to Conroe Texas in 1978 I was so excited becuase Conroe had a McDonalds, and it was one with a play yard. I was instantly sold on the town, even though our current home, Nacogdoches, had a Burger Chef, and dairy Queen and at last, a Burger king that just moved in. Still, we would drive to Lufkin to go to McDonalds about once a month, so then my parents did make it special.

Now that there's one on seemingly every block, it's not so special anymore.

The whole study seems to be connected to trying to cut child obesity by cutting off the source. I'd say it's kind of wrong-headed. If parents would make better choices, their kids might too. I'm a good example, as my parents didn't really create good eating habits for me, I grew up with a poor diet for the rest of my life. Still, some people think if they can cut children's exposure to commercials, they won't want to eat McDonald's food, or have that sugary cereal. The fact is, you deny a kid something, and he'll eventually hear about it from some friends with more liberal parents, he's still going to try to get it somehow.

I'll be interested to see how the cereal makers do as they voluntarily take commercials off the air for cereals that have more sugar, or other unhealty attributes. While we loved the antics of Lucky, the Trix rabbit and Tony the Tiger, kids today will be enjoying ads for Cheerios, Mini Wheats and Kix. (I'll admit I'd be happy to see more ads with the Kashii bear, myself) I think if Saturday Morning Cartoons aren't dead now, they will be soon.

I just don't see how this revelation is a big deal. McDonald's adds healthier items to their menu, but people really don't care, they go there for a burger, and the children see this. If anything it could be good. If a child sees the apple bites, or carrots or milk and would rather eat those because it has a McDonald's wrapper, then bring it on. if McDoanld's can make that cool with kids over burgers and fries, then let them do it.

Most families don't have the time to prepare healthy food, and lower income families struggle to provide it. McDonald's is at least trying. they haven't been adding one pound burgers and enormous egg sandwiches to their menu, even when it might sell well for them. They know they are under scrutiny and have tried to do well under pressure.

I personally get sick of these nanny state developments where they try to take away something from everyone because they can't abide by letting people make a decision. I say bring on Capt'n Crunch and make a parent have to tell the kid no and buy them Wheaties. I try to keep my McDonald's intake low, and I think parents should make that decision too.

Personally I find these types of research studies a waste of time, especially when they are so pointed against one product or one company. I'd like to see this same study broadened to include other brands and to have a real test of wether the McDonald's brand really is that strong, or just better than the generic brand X. Plenty of studies have been made showing many people prefer branded merchandise.

Oh, and one last thing about McDonald's advertising. Did the Hamburglar actually make anyone go out and steal hamburgers?

Tonight I've been studying for my exam on the bed, and Joey the Dog decided to get up on the bed with me. Instead of just curling up next to me, she decided that it was time to be noticed, so she got in my face, pushed the book around, and barked several times. After being told by both Chris and I to stop barking, she kept going. Even minor amounts of petting weren't keeping her from wanting more.

After another round of barking, I told her, "Shut up Miss Coulter!"

Really, that's just the thing, just like Joey, the conservative pundit is just out there barking for attention. She's hoping that barking will lead to book sales and more speaking opportunities, as she doesn't seem to have much in the way of other talents. The more we pay attention to her, the more she gets.

Truly, the worst part is there are plenty who are listening to her every word. they love for her to be outrageous and go cackling on, since they think its 1) something they couldn't, or wouldn't say themselves. 2) something that validates their victimhood. Attacks like hers generally are applauded by those who feel that they've been hurt or wronged in some way by the other side. it's sort of the same thing as those who believe in the "War on Christianity" feel like their being persecuted by a minority and can't properly celebrate if it isn't done in a mass, publicly acknowledged way.

At the Conservative Political Action Committee Convention you have a lot of people still smarting from the Democratic majority in congress and a weakening president the attendees were just waiting for someone to come out swinging - but it wasn't going to be any of the candidates. Given that a word like "faggot" could sink a campaign in this exceptionally early race, none would actually say something like that. Heck, Senator Joseph Biden's campaign has practically been put to pasture by just mentioning that Senator Barack Obama was "clean".

So what to do? Send out the dog. Here she is, she has not political campaign to worry about, and she's preaching to the choir. She's the one who can be unleashed. Still, except for the attack on former Senator Edwards, what did she say? Little has been said about the rest of her speech, which I would guess was mostly about Democratic frontrunners Hillary Clinton and Obama as she said she didn't get a chance to talk about the other frontrunner.

My guess is that she hadn't gotten much milage about her views on the frontrunners, so why not throw out one big, nasty bomb at the end of the speech? This is from someone who has dogged World Trade Center widows, so what would be shocking?

It's the problem with current media that they keep falling for this shit. Look, someone said a naughty word, or shaved their head, or got caught with a bad drivers license or exposed their nipple? Come on people. Don't you know when your being used? We've got plenty of media whores around here, and a very big group of encouragers - Entertainment Tonight, Extra, Larry King, Nancy Grace, Bill O'Reilly, I could go on and on.

Sure, there's people who laughed. Heck, it's like a Bevis and Butthead level joke - there's little thought required. Ohh, look, she's so outrageous. Ohh, Zing! Big deal. Beyond the shock value, what is there of substance? It's the same of her colums or speeches. How many people really talk about her books beyond the outrageous blurbs on the cover?

Really, I've talked about this more than I wanted to, as I too have joined the ranks of people who've given her more attention than she deserves. While some of you may want to scream about putting this particular bitch on a leash, personally I'd be more satisfied if she was just spayed and taken off to the farm.

I have my own dog, and she's much more lovable and pleasant to be around, barks and all.

Meh.

Meh.

I say Meh. tonight to the fact that "Dreamgirls" didn't get nominated for Best Picture Oscar. I guess I'm one of the only gays who hasn't seen this movie and doesn't plan to. Good for Jennifer Hudson, but personally I'd love to see Amber Breslin win for "Little Miss Sunshine".

I say Meh. tonight to President Bush's State of the Union speech where he just rehashed a whole domestic agenda that he's proposed before. Lot of big statements with very little answers to them. So you want to provide more healthcare to people by cutting their taxes...yeah. Once he got on to the whole Iraq/War on Terror part I tuned away to "The Stepford Wives."

I say Meh. to last night's "Heroes" for being dull. Too much of the I've got powers and they're ruining my life bit. Thank goodness for the actor playing Hiro or this episode would have been unbearable.

I say Meh. to the fact that I can no longer find Beef Romanov flavor Hamburger Helper in the store anymore. Some of the new flavors aren't as good, and I don't like that they changed the Beef Taco flavor's pasta. why the change? It's not healthier or anything.

I say Meh. to Sirius Satellite Radio for deciding that they want to have a "Jamie Foxx" channel which will move OutQ to another station on the dial as they want the "Foxxhole" to be next to the other comedy channels (including "Blue Collar Radio"). More channels I have no reason to listen to.

I say Meh. to the "controversy" of Grey's Anatomy star Issac Washington calling TR Knight a "faggot" or maybe he didn't, who the heck knows. Just friggin' apologize properly, go into rehab for a while and try to keep your job. Still, i guess I wouldn't be taken aback so much by being called a faggot, really.

Speaking of that, Meh. to the Donnie Davies/God Hates Fags thing. Poor guy just couldn't get a date, I suppose, so now he's Ex-Gay - or something. I have to agree with Matty that it's a farce since the band and the ministry websites were recently created and he said the band has existed for some time. I call shenanigans. Or stupidity. whatever.

Meh. to the Red Hot Chili Peppers (all your songs sound the same) and to Rage Against the Machine (all your rants sound the same).

Meh to the controversy of Dakota Fanning being in a movie shown at Sundance where her character is raped. Not something I'd see for sure, and everyone will stay away if she screams like she did in "War of the Worlds." Still, if her parents were cool with it, and she was, then by all means. She'll probably need therapy for many things later on, why not one more.

Lastly, I say Meh. to the guy who made me get up and go to work an hour and a half early to give a speech about his group and their business plans which didn't include us. I certainly know what his group is going to do, but I don't know what my group does to support his agenda. it also doesn't help when you create acronyms that aren't industry standard and you don't explain them. I wish I could have slept through your meeting.

Now let's hear it for getting some sleep.
