Birthdays Are Murder (and a Ball)

Well, it's been an interesting day today. I know that Chris (
f__k) tried to call me at 6 am or something. I had no idea why, but probably to wish me a happy birthday or something. Still, since I don't wake up until after seven, and the phone was in another room, I didn't pick that up. Once I did wake up, Larry (
lfkbear) wished me a happy birthday on-air, and tried to make me a year older than I am today, but it was probably my fault for updating my journal info last night.
So here's to being 38.
I went into work. I haven't worked on my birthday in quite some time, normally trying to take the day off when I can, but being mid week, and needing all of my limited vacation time this year, I opted not to this year. Still, I'm not one to trumpet my birthday-ness to my work group. It actually went unnoticed for a good half the day, before my old boss Lisa had finally emailed the team cluing them in.
Of course they thought they were being cool about it, but I could tell that something had changed, and that they were not doing their work - then I saw a short email pop on Monica's screen with my name on it, and I knew that the jig was up. In a couple of minutes there was a card, balloons and cookies. My new boss, Ed (not to be confused with Big Ed), was trying to save face by saying that he'd take me to lunch tomorrow.
I'll admit that it was a bit of a passive-aggressive way to go, but i also really was just happy for the acknowledgment, and really didn't need them to buy stuff for me. It's OK. Plus I was busy with the stuff I needed to do, and trying to get Ed up to speed, so I'm happy for the well wishes (and the cookies), now lets get on with it.
After work I ran over to Barnaby's to join Jerry (
goofycubb) and Shane (
shanecub35) and a couple of their friends for dinner. I'm sure one of their friends wonders who I am since I ended up talking about education issues for half of the meal like I knew what I was talking about. Still, they were going on to see March of the Penguins, and I really wasn't that interested in seeing the tuxedoed birds.
Instead, after a call from my sister, I went off to see the movie Murderball. I've been waiting to see this movie for a while, and I'm so glad I did. It was really fantastic, not just a documentary about a sport (quad rugby), but one about people who have really overcome the odds and done something remarkable. I know this one won't be in theaters much longer, but either in the theaters, or renting it later when it comes to DVD, please see this movie.
Otherwise, I did manage to look up a couple of horoscopes today, since they usually pop in a little section about someone's birthday. It's likely hogwash, but it's always kind of fun to hold onto their predictions and see if you can make anything out of the vagary that they give you. Here's the two that I found today:
From the Houston Chronicle:
TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (August 3). You'll enjoy a year filled with fascinating people and love galore. Instinctive moves bring lucrative results in September. The end of a project paves the way for a grand adventure in October. You'll be enchanted by new opportunities in December and may relocate to take advantage of one. Your connection with Aries and Libra is meaningful. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 30, 1, 7 and 8.
And from the Dallas Morning News:
Birthday Baby: You are tough, determined and will never leave anything worth doing unfinished. You belong in the spotlight and can attract attention easily. You are changeable, adaptable and open-minded. Happy Birthday: This is your year to make it to the top. Although you will face some frustrations and tough decisions, everything you have experienced up until now will help you do what's right. A chance to step into the spotlight is apparent. Confidence must be maintained, so keep your head up and your mind alert. Your numbers are 11, 15, 27, 30, 41, 44
I like the part about relocating from the first. Still, funny that the lucky numbers don't match up, still, if I put them together, do I win the lottery?
Of course, you've already won when Paul (
bearpawly) is on your voicemail singing a Marilyn Monroe inspired version of "Happy Birthday" - including a breathless "Mr. President" whisper!
Thanks for the well wishes everyone! (and happy birthday to
mikiedoggie too!)
