Nu Shooz

So, why in the world did I need new shoes the other night?

I had a job interview Wednesday morning. It was internal, with my current company, but with another division - Marketing. It's a really interesting position, and is being pursued by many people in marketing itself, so I'd be the (very) dark horse candidate coming from the customer service side of the fence.

It's not that customer service people haven't been hired into our marketing department, on the contrary, the department is full of people who used to work for us. This specific area, Retirement Marketing, is full of people I've worked with in the past, just this specific position is a little higher on the food chain, and it's rather exclusive. There's only 2 spots, where as several other positions have more people doing the same job. This specific job is on a lot of people's radar.

So how did I get involved in this circus? Well, most positions have to go on the company's job bank, so I decided to put in for it. I had been hesitant to put my hat in the ring for marketing for a long time, but now I'm in more of a go-for-it mode. I think I've learned all I can in my current level, and it wouldn't hurt to learn something new. If I'm not finding something outside of my current company, perhaps something internal could build my resume.

Still, I'm a little conflicted, because if I were to get this, I would feel like I should get something out of it. It would probably slow me down from my bigger goal of moving to the Big D, but in a way, it would probably assist me in getting a better job there. Certainly having a job, should I somehow get it, that would have marketing and sales experience on my resume, would probably help tremendously along with my customer service and management skills.

Still, I'm trying not to build this up too much, simply because I'm such a longshot. I'd be the candidate that would need the most training. Even though I think I did well in the interview, I did well because I wasn't under pressure. I'm not likely to be the one chosen when they have candidate who have already been in the division. Perhaps when one of their jobs come open, I can be considered for those, and that, while less interesting than this position, would still be very interesting, and good for my future.

No matter what, I'm still looking to expand my future. It's time to grow again, I just need the opportunity, and need to take the risks.
