I don't buy a ton of DVD's. I tend to buy things I know I can't catch often on TV, so when I saw that this is coming out today...oh I need this one.

Mork and Mindy Season One.

It's priced well, too. I almost bought the Wonder Woman first season because it was cheap, compared to say, Six Feet Under or Angel Season 4, also out now..

Yes, I was one of those geeks that had the Rainbow Suspenders (yes, yet another sign I totally missed in my past), and I dressed like Mork for Halloween, including a big egg that had candy that I handed out to the neighborhood kids. (Strangely this has nothing to do with my nickname now.) That was what, 1979? Given that I was in a new school, just entering Jr. High, yep, I was labeled a freak.

Did I mention that I found the Mork and Mindy Trading Card set as I was clearing out my room at my parent's old house?

Still, I bought Robin Williams comedy record (mmm, Vinyl) and it was Filthy! My mom never really heard it, which was a good thing. Even with that record, he was already trying to get away from the Mork character. Given that Patch Adams, and a few other roles of his were more of an embarrassment, I think he shouldn't have complained so much about Mork and the weekly moral at the end of the show.

The show just had a special place in my childhood. sure, it's formulaic, and it was totally recycled by Third Rock From the Sun, but it's fun.

Mork was my hero around 1st grade. I had an action figure of him that used to hang out with all my Star Wars guys.

Did I just imagine the ending to that series? Everytime I mention the cave wall painting thing to people who claim to love that show, I get blank stares. Please tell me you know what I'm talking about. I'd hate think I hallucinated the series end. :p

Hey! Mork's suspenders look awfully familiar...

I remember that on "Nick at Nite." My friend Don and I watched 'Wonder Woman' - I'd never seen it before. :)

Paramount is finally doing some good by releasing their TV crapola on DVD. I'm not so much fond of Happy Days, but Laverne & Shirley definitely has my attention. As for Mork & Mindy, even now, I was far more fond of Mindy (Pam Dawber, who never got much respect because Robin Williams had to always go over the top with his shtick, which you'll notice, he puts into everything, through Patch Adams). Still, there's some amusement there.

Still, just the same, if they have to release a Garry Marshall sitcom on DVD, why can't it be The Odd Couple?

That makes me feel old! I think I was 11 or 12 at the time.

Did you ever have the boardgame?

Uhm, well I think there was an episode they were trapped in the past with Mearth, but I don't think it was the last one. The show ended with a relative whimper after the year of Johnathan Winters as Mork and Mindy's baby. Never let the main characters get married. Always ruins the show.

There's certainly a difference between "quality" and "loved". There are lots of shows that were great without being quality shows. I'll watch any episode of "I Dream of Jeannie" over "Hill Street Blues".

Oh, I can tell the difference between "quality" and "loved". Quality is in the writing, the acting, the production values. "Loved" has to do with the intangibles, like quirkiness, like memorable characters (the Fonz, Mork), like that undeniable feeling you get when you see one element far outshine a dozen others.

Sometimes it's far better to watch a show that makes you feel good, rather than a show that's good for you. That's why I resist the shows that everyone claims is the thing to restore my faith in TV, like Six Feet Under, Arrested Development, Nip/Tuck. They may have the goods, but they seem like eating beets: good for you, but not so much good, period.
