Yep, I'm writing from the new iMac. It's up, running and FAST. Now I have two computers on my desk and my laptop is off in the other room. I will have to transfer a lot of files to make it like "home".

I pulled it out of the box as I was waiting for my laundy to get done, so I didn't get to do too much configuring yet, but luckily, with the wireless network, setting up to get on the internet was a snap.

Now I have two things to do. I need to name the new computer. The old iMac is known as Channel Z, named after the B-52's song from Cosmic Thing - "Gettin' Nothing but Static, Gettin' Nothing but Static, on Channel Z..."

The new computer's name is up for grabs right now.

Also, once old Channel Z is decommissioned, I'll have to find a place/use for it. I've been thinking of giving it over to the fraternity boys and girls, as their old Power Mac 650 is way past it's prime. I remember going to buy that old monster!

With that being said, it's poll time!

I'll keep that in mind. You really need an older iMac?

What is your old computer first? That might determine what can be done with it.

As for naming the new one, I always name my computers on the same theme. Right now the current theme is Pokemon characters. Squirtle is the laptop. Pikachu my desktop. The slow computer is Muck. Pokedex is the NT 4.0 Server (and Domain Controller). Etc.

The only one without a name is the PowerMac 7100 and that is simply because I so rarely use it anymore.

So on that theme, I'd call the new computer a B-52's song: "Debbie", "Deadbeat Club", "Love Shack"... Definitely Love Shack.

It's a 1998 iMac DV in graphite grey. The first with the DVD readable drive. It can run Jaguar and does relatively well. I've wondered if it could run a small internet radio broadcast and a webpage server. Two things I want to try.

If you run OS X on it, you should have no problem doing either a web broadcast or a webserver. OS X I believe had Apache pre-installed all you have to do is configure it.

Course that depends on if you have a fixed IP connection or if it's a dynamic IP setup, which could make webserving a bit more difficult.

But yeah, OS X should have no problems doing those.

A friend of mine bought some of the G3 All-In-One machines to run as an iTunes radio station for his home. Wasn't broadcast over the internet, but internal so that he could either share his MP3s to all the machines in the house or he could stream the output onto his stereos throughout the house. Was a cool setup.

Well, I run everything through my wireless network, so all of the computers are hooked up to DSL here.

I'd love to host a web-page, and learn how to build one, and have my own internet radio station, just for the heck of it. I've been able to do a little networking to get the iBook to change the song the other computer is playing on iTunes, once. That was a happy accident, though.

I'm not terribly technically minded. I own a Mac so I don't have to be.

Hosting a web page is easy on OS X. You've got apache built in.

Radio station: That's a bit tougher. You'll probably need some sort of StreamCast server, but not sure what's available for Mac. My Mac is old enough to remember the PRE-PowerPC days. ;) (7100)

And that's the beauty of the Mac. The OS is powerful enough to get a lot of interest from the really big geeks, like me, who like Unix. Yet simple enough for people who don't want to deal with all that stuff. It's rare to find something both powerful AND userfriendly. Linux is still trying to do it. Microsoft is still trying. But Apple's got it right now. Congrats!
