So a man who isn’t know for his strength in economic matters decides that his campaign polling is too low and he decides he must rush back to Washington to look like he’s the part of the solution. Great. What will he do there? How does his presence, after not being in the Senate for months, change what is already being worked on?

So Senator McCain wants Senator Obama to also come off the trail and come back to Washington at a time where early voting is already going on in several states and those final impressions are critical.

And Senator McCain also wants to cancel the first debate on Friday.

Someone is running scared.

It’s amazing. McCain’s campaign seems to be going strong if you just look at the surface, but looking deeper, you can tell the lies and the win at any cost mentality is starting to bring the whole house of cards down. For more than a month Senator McCain stayed away from the press, and Gov. Palin was kept away from giving anything but pre written soundbites and speeches. The fact is, the issues aren’t on their side, and neither McCain nor Palin can be trusted right now to not go off message.

The answer is to stop having to talk to anyone. Run back to Washington and cancel the debate. No questions allowed, nothing but propaganda is given to the press. It’s an amazing development that should scream to the public, this man cannot be trusted with the presidency. It’s all image and no substance, and you’ll be vilified if you try to look beyond the veneer.

It’s similar to being a patriot these days. If you don’t buy the line that in America everything’s fine, then you are the enemy. If you dare ask if McCain or Palin are ready to be president, off with your head.

I’m certainly outraged by the tactic. Sure, McCain has been saying that the campaign would have been more civil if Obama had just agreed to campaign with him, and do the town hall tour with him. Now McCain will try to take the high road, saying that he came back to Washington to help the people, while Obama continued to give speeches. I hope people don’t buy this line of bull.

Why have a debate if you aren’t ready, and you might be asked substantive questions. If you can’t win on the issues, make the campaign about…nothing. McCain’s strategy is baffling and frightening.

Senator Obama’s camp has released a statement saying that the debate is still on. I hope Obama wipes the floor with him.

This whole "I'm going to do the statesmanlike thing and propose to skip the debates so I can fix things in Washington" ploy is just too bizarre.

As somebody else blogged today, I guess we now know how McCain would handle a situation where there's bad war news coming in at the same time as bad economic news. I guess he'd say we have to put the war on hold so he can concentrate on the economy.

That looks real presidential, Sen. McCain.

I'm glad Obama just emphasized how important it is for the people of the United States to get a chance to hear the candidates discuss the tough issues of the day, and refused to go along with a delay in the debates.

I am too young to remember anything of the Kennedy-Nixon debates, but I think this series has the potential to have the same historic impact. I just hope the moderators and organizers don't turn the debates into "fluff-fests".

McCain is all for wars. He woudl put the economy on hold for the war, I think.

The McCain campaign was using this new tactic to try to box Obama in. I'm sure that Obama's team worked hard to try to strike the right tone in response as it will be one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't moments. I'm glad that Obama can come off so calm and measured during these events. It helps when he isn't goaded into fights.

I'm not sure how to interpret this move. Either it'll be looked upon as that he's running from the debates or that he's coming to Washington to rescue the economy. Most likely Dems will view it one way and Republicans the other. Man I just wish this was all over, as I fear the tricks that the McCain campaign will pull in order to win in the upcoming weeks. Sad to see the Rovian "win at all costs" mantra take hold of a Senator that I had previously respected for his refusal to take part in such antics.

Well, on the surface, it looks brilliant. Here' comes John to save the day! Putting aside politics to work together to save the country. Pretty much that's what this move is designed to do, get the people who don't pay attention to hear how great McCain is, and how engaged he is that he would suspend his campaign (but not fundraising).

It seems more of a way to attempt to pin Obama down as not being effective during this crisis, and to say that he ignored it. Personally this whole issue needs less politics, not more, but hey, whatever it takes to get McCain elected, right?

McCain is a big coward. Do you remember the movie "House Party" with Kid N' Play? There's a scene where the bullies know that you're scared and say the famous line. "sniff sniff, you know what I smell, I smell pussy." And that what McCain is. It's no coincidence that on the same day we find out that Rick Davis was on Freddie Mac's pay roll until last month which was on the front page of the New York Times, reported on Huffington Post & Rachel Maddow show and then two days later the debate was coming around the corner. Yeah it would been the first question of the night.
McCain is nothing but McChicken or better yet McPussy.
Here's a poll you need to vote. PBS is setting a poll to see if Gov. Palin is qualified for Vice President. Of course I voted NO.

I like the McChicken - old and kind of tough with a crunchy crust.

No trouble, we know how this campaign is run, run away from the issues, try to drive a narrative, and creat distractions and straw men. Rove seemed to make it an art, actually, but the McCain campain can't seem to carry it off. No wonder Rove is only indirectly involved. These guys would sully his reputation as a mastermind.

Didn't McCain previously promise that if he was elected, he would find and capture Osama Bin Laden?

Ummm, can't he tell us how to do that, even if he doesn't get elected?

I would have voted for him 8 years ago. Maybe. Not a single chance in hell, for the McCain of 2008.

Heck, President Bush promised that. I still expect Bin Laden to pop up and deliver a scary message to America next month.

I like that McCain knows how to capture Bin Laden, but is waiting until he's president before he'll share that.

I liked McCain as well, eight years ago, but that man has been destroyed by the desire to win the presidency at any cost.
