Land of a Thousand Words

The Scissor Sisters played Dallas tonight and it was one of the most energy-filled concerts I've ever been to. The crowd was mixed, some really into it and dancing, others hanging back. The venue was crowded, but not packed. Ana Matronic said it was the most people they have played for outside of New York City...I'll take it with a grain of salt, but that's what she said.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Jake and Ana are very theatrical, while the working heart of the band lies low. Still, I was amazed by the guitar solos - something you rarely hear in rock today - maybe because the emo-kids don't really know how to play. They played all of the hits, and a few other songs - and I knew them all. Let's hear it for the extended version of Filthy/Gorgeous!
I love their music, not that it's anything new, but it's just a good smash up of styles from the sixties, seventies and eighties along with an ironic twist that comes from the band's personalities. You can easily see where the B-52's, Elton John, David Bowie and the New York Dolls all play a part in their music with a little disco thrown in.
We saw some people we knew, but never did find John, Brendan, Mike and David. Sad because I really wanted to see John's fabulous outfit. Still, fewer drag queens and club kids than was expected. Lot's of bears. Lot's of dancing.
Loved the opening act, Wigs on Sticks.

I was really impressed by the guitar work by all of the fellows. I think people would dismiss them as a gay garage band act, but these guys really have their chops.

Date: 2007-03-19 03:08 pm (UTC)Las Vegas is strange because the population is transient. Sure, the city is growing with more permanent residents, but I'm sure most artists try to consider the travelling audience and if they would come to a tour concert vs. all of the rest of the regular shows on the strip. This is why LV doesn't have a majopr sports franchise. Who would by season tickets?

Date: 2007-03-16 06:17 pm (UTC)I saw them when they launched their tour here in LA. It was a terrible venue. The sound was TERRIBLE. I couldn't see a thing and I was up front (too many taller people ahead of me) and I'm 5'9"! It was like watching a college band play in an auditorium. Plus they weren't that familiar with the new material yet. I'm hoping they come back to LA.

Date: 2007-03-19 02:59 pm (UTC)They really try to get the audience involved. It's very good stuff, and they work to keep the energy up.
The Scissor Sisters were AMAZING!!
Date: 2007-03-22 05:48 pm (UTC)Seeing *all* of Amanda Lapore was highly unusual and very entertaining. Then again I don't expect to the post operative tranie performers *NAKED* in Dallas. So it was quite a party.
Also, I got to talk to BabyDaddy (Scott) for about 10 minutes, he is really great. I chatted with Ana Matronic for 15 minutes, she is funny and really sweet. I am so glad I went to the afterparty. It was worth the 15 bucks.
You can read about it on my blog and on the livejournal of JediKnightCub.
