Certainly Not Visionary by Any Means
Sep. 15th, 2005 11:55 pmI'm looking at the new fall TV schedule. I love television, probably too much, and with some of my shows ending last year, I need to see what is going into the subscription list on my TiVo. I was watching HBO's Rome the other night, and after two shows, I can already say that it's off the list. Some other shows won't be back for a bit, and Battlestar Galactica will be over for it's second series very soon. Still, I find that many nights there's just nothing on, while as usual there's one or two nights where everything is stacked up against each other.
This year it seems like everything I want to watch is on Wednesday night at 7:00 Central.
Last year I got hooked in early on Lost. it's a unique show, now being copied by everyone. It will be very interesting to see if they can keep it up, but the best part of the show to me wasn't the mystery, that was interesting, but the flashbacks that showed who the characters were before the crash. I hope they don't give that up. with the last show showing all of the main characters boarding the plane, I'm worried that they are going to concentrate on the island life, and not who these people are. Learning in bits and pieces things that hadn't or wouldn't reveal to the other castaways was fascinating and made the show work.
Lost is stating at it's time from last year, but competing against it are two interests for me. One is America's Next Top Model. I never thought I'd watch this show, but
zombietruckstop and
mattycub convinced me. the show is silly, and crazy and lets face it, models are strange creatures with odd emotions and a strange sense of competitiveness that's campy, compelling television.
The other show on Wednesday is The Apprentice: Martha Stewart. Now I know, you're thinking that I'm a reality show junkie, but really, I'll watch some, but I haven't watched the Bachelor, The Swan, Temptation Island or any of that crap. I don't even watch Survivor. After two seasons of that, it wasn't really that interesting to me anymore. I can't say that I'm a fan of Donald's version of this, I watched a couple of shows and thought it was stupid, especially because the Donald's hiring and firing isn't rooted in any sort of logic. I bet HR people just scream at this. Still, I'm willing to give Martha a try, because I think this could be interesting. It would be more interesting if Martha would be with the contestants all of the time, and I think the tests will be just as stupid and "co-branded" as the original show, but I'm willing to give this a couple of weeks.
Where I'm lucky is that NBC re-shows The Apprentice: Martha Stewart on CNBC and UPN, land of no hit shows, re-runs Top Model on the following Tuesday. I'll be behind, but it's only television. I get to watch Lost at it's regular time.
Otherwise, one of my favorite shows is a reality show, and that's The Amazing Race. I'm not sure if the 'family' edition with four-person teams will be any good, but they've done pretty well so far in keeping my interest over seven "seasons'. I'm also glad that Arrested Development is back again, and hopeful that Desperate Housewives will be able to keep going. Some episodes got a little slow there.
As for new shows, I'm looking forward to Threshold, since
bobaloo has already seen the pilot and thinks that it will be a big hit. It's one of those mystery shows, this one with a sort of CSI procedural vibe with it's extra-terrestrial CDC vibe. could be interesting. I'm not as sold on Surface, Supernatural, and Invasion, but if I were to try any of them, it will probably be Invasion.
Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be any good sitcoms this year. The Simpsons is in decline, and so is Will & Grace. The new shows look awful, and that includes the Wonder Years inspired Everyone Hates Chris. It seems like it's just a nastier version of the old flashback show.
Lastly, we need to talk about shows that need to go. Why is ER still on the air? Sure, Law and Order has been on longer, but i hear that the stories are still strong. ER is just going from stunt to stunt, and the characters have gone to pot. L&O isn't a character show, being about the cases. Then there's That 70's Show. This show is in the third year of 1979, and it left funny back in 1976. Malcolm in the Middle and Reba are long in the tooth as well.
Oh, and there's nothing on Saturday, period.
Last note, i just discovered that ABC has moved Lost to an hour later, so now it's time to decide, Martha or Tyra.
