Skylarking

My first car was the 1980 Buick Skylark. It was my Dad's car first, but it was the one I learned to drive first, with the second being my mom's crap-brown station wagon. Sadly I drove the station wagon with 5 friends to the prom.

The skylark thought was a two-door economy car that came in a metallic blue - originally. Within its first year the paint had peeled off of it in big, flakey batches. The car eventually got a self-applied batch of grey primer, but never got another coat of paint while we had it. It was a vehicle commonly called the Rustmobile.

Here's a photo of the Skylark in it's prime. It's a little too big to bring here, and I'm no good at resizing.

The rustmobile was the vehicle I got in trouble in when me and some friends were having a sleep-over and decided to sneak out of the backyard we were camping in and go off for a joyride. Unfortunately Brian's mother came out to give him some cough medicine and found us gone. We had gone off to the car and pushed it out of the driveway and into the street before staring the engine (who's catalytic converter was dying).

I remember coming around the curve and seeing my Dad in the dark, waiting in the driveway. We tried to drive by, for some irrational reason thinking we could fool Dad that it wasn't us. Still, we had to go back, and well, I think I was grounded. Dad was a little pissed.

Then there was the time I was driving the Rustmobile to high school and we, Brian, Josh and I, went to Winchell's for a donut first. A gal I hated, Cherri, was also there. When I got to school I was told that I had backed into her Camero, putting a dent in the door. It was odd, since none of us in the car ever felt us hit the Camaro, or remembered that it was even in the parking lot.

Cherri and I fought it through the insurance groups. Luckily Brian's dad was our insurance agent, so all three of us explained the situation to him. The Camero was hit in such a way that none of the bumpers matched where the dent was. She was busted, and never got a cent out of us, and my record was still somewhat clean - except for when I ran into the back of a truck with the rustmobile while I was working my paper route.

Cherri was still pissed when I transfered to the newly opened Mervyn's store in the woodlands while I was in college. She was hired there fresh, so I was the senior guy there. We worked to try to not work together much.

Otherwise, the rustmobile was sold off in the late 80's. it was limping badly. I got, from my dad, a Dodge Shadow, the first red car I've had. Still I wouldn't by a car on my own until 1997, after driving three others into the ground.

None of the other cars ever had vinyl seats like the Rustmobile did. You don't want vinyl in the Texas heat.
