Sending you a Bulletin
Jul. 30th, 2004 08:32 amFirst, Hans, King of Free Movie Passes, had tickets to see M. Night Shyamalan's The Village. it was the strangest one of these events I have ever been to because they gave everyone of us a wristband, took our name down, and brushed us with metal detectors prior to showing the movie. The process was very slow, and the movie started an hour late because of it.
We were told that the list of names was taken because M. Night wanted to know who saw the movie. Hans immediately asked if we would be sent a thank you card, and I said, well, you may be the only Hans Lawshe in town, but my name's to generic. it's not like they took our addresses or anything.
The movie was really good. It's more a plot driven thriller than a character development movie, but it keeps you guessing and it's really interesting. Very brainy. i could tell that about a third of the audience was still confused as we left the theater. I'm going to be smug and say that I figured out the mystery before it was revealed - except for one point.
Of course, before the movie we were asked not to reveal the plot of the movie. I won't do that, there are definite surprises and thrills. it is not a scary movie, though. It's more Hitchock than Friday the 13th, creepy, suspenseful. The movie is shot beautifully too.
In work related moves. Our team is supposed to create a bulletin board (well, actually two, one for each side of the floor) announcing our team an what we do. Well, we don't do anything! It's really hard to make a bog deal out of a team who's main purpose doesn't start until September - if we're lucky!
So it's busywork. fine. I came up with an idea to show off what we will be doing. It's tough when I know much more about this than my reps do, so i have to dictate these things. It's hard to collaborate, but i tried. We had a meeting about the board and I solicited ideas more about 45 minutes. (cue chirping crickets)
So i took over and designed what the board would look like, and there was finally a suggestion from the peanut gallery. Since we're under construction, why not use that as a theme - great! so we run with that, and I know I could get some supplies for the board at a local party shop if we go with a variation on the construction theme...
Enter Bob the Builder.
Kid friendly with lots of construction stuff for kids parties that would mean we wouldn't have to create a lot of stuff. Perfect. I give the idea to my boss and she says...No.
she thinks it's too silly. she's only worried that the big boss, mary will disapprove. mary, who actually does have a sense of humor, scares the managers to death, and they try hard not to create waves. Lisa doesn't want to have something that might look frivolous go up, and then have to explain to mary that it's her group who came up with it.
Well, sorry. It's the best thing we could come up with, and it is whimsical. Work is boring enough. I guess I'm earning my rebel badge, but I'm telling you that I'm sticking with it. Lisa wants us to have yet another meeting to discuss this. I don't. i just know I'll be sitting in front of my team, as they stare back at me. I've done my job.
