eggwards: (homicidal maniac)
I was out with the folks last night. It was a bit of the usually, but there were two interesting moments...

First, we're at Red Lobster (yeah, I know) and one of the waiters is a customer of the gun shop my dad works for. He bounds over to talk to my dad about guns, and he keeps trying to get me in the conversation, thinking that I too, like guns. I really couldn't care less, and actually I'm a little worried about this guy, since he's only 17 years old.

He starts mentioning to my dad that he wants to get some modifications to his favorite gun, this implying that he has more than one gun. The favorite gun has a problem, when he's shooting from his clip, the fifth bullet always goes awry. He demonstrates this by pointing to himself, first in the center of his chest, going one, two, three, four, then pointing to his shoulder, stating "five". He does the action over again.

I pipe up saying, "Well, it seems like the first four did the job." He looks at me and says "Yeah, but it's not so good in competition." O.K., so he's shooting in competition, but still, what a strange thought. Why would you use yourself as a demonstration unit when talking about a shooting competition? Certainly I got the wrong idea.

He spoke about having a gun at home to, and announced to us that it was his "meet the neighbors" gun. Needless to say I won't be visiting his neighborhood.

Otherwise, my mom brought up the topic of the president's State of the Union speech. I started dissecting the speech, saying that I was really disappointed by this president, and I thought his just adding on and on to the spending was not helping the situation. I actually stayed away from the discussion of marriage until my mother brought it up.

I took her to town on the subject, explaining my thoughts that a marriage amendment just shows the foolishness of the argument, and that state marriage is different than religious marriage and should be seen as such. All of these arguments I have written about before. I think mom was surprised about how much I had thought about this.

Still, I didn't tell her my main reason for the argument. Dad actually went off to the bathroom during the argument, which disappointed me a bit. Still, I think he knows I'm setting things up for the eventual announcement. it's just a matter of finding the right moment to let the truth come out.
