So I'm moving again.

No, not to Dallas. I wish I was, but not yet. (I am taking off for Dallas after work, though.)

Nope, this is a work move. My group, along with Greg's and Screaming Amy's are moving from the East side of the floor to the West side. (West side in the hiz-ouse!)

Let me draw a little picture. Our building is a 31-story glass tower, clad in a pleasing light blue and sits next to another, identical tower to our east. In between towers is a small pocket park with a fountain where when we were changing systems I would often go and meditate while Amy was, well screaming.

The building is a rectangle, presenting it's longest sides on the eastern and western sides. If you joined us on the 9th floor, you would see the northern and southern walls have the conference rooms and executive offices, and in between is one cube farm along the eastern windows, another along the western, and all of the services, elevators, bathrooms and the kitchen in between.

My team is in the north-east corner of the building. It's nice because it's shady. the other building keeps the sun away for most of the day. We're also close to a conference room and to my manager, Gina.

The center west side is sunny most of the day, and therefore several degrees warmer, plus there's more glare on my computer monitor, as all of our cubes face away from the windows. We're also farther away from the bathroom. A definite minus in my book.

We moved to this spot more than a year and a half ago. At that time we were still hiring, we had twice the staff that we have now, and the economy had already started tumbling. We were doing more redemptions than anything else.

Now were lean and mean (as in, we've lost a lot of staff, but we aren't replacing them), purchases are picking up a little and we've changed systems, and started to take over the processing of our sister company so we can lay off their staff, as well.

This desk is the desk I've been in the longest. I've had 10 other desks with this company, changing sides, floors and teams. I'm a pack rat. It took me six boxes to move me into this desk in 2001. I have no idea how many it will take to finish the job today. I already started filling a box with my toys, baseball player action figures, bulls and bears, a slinky, my big "Wheel of Morality" that I use to make fun decisions. Decisions like, "who will get to process this 513 line adjustment?" Turn, Turn, Turn.

The reason is that my team, as well as Greg and Amy's are being merged in with another larger group. Gina, instead of just having us three will have 10 supervisors to look over. It's going to be much harder to get her attention now. That's probably a good and bad thing.

Of course, this comes in the middle of review season, taking up my time. I have to be out of my desk by 5 when the movers start coming. I don't know the total figure, but there's about 50 people moving around this weekend, as another group is leaving where we're going, and they hire movers for all of it. The cost has to be huge. All of his due to re-alignment. We really don't have to move but for aesthetics.

So, I've already got several boxes, I'll go through files, books, notes, ancient texts, many that I've written myself, and place them in. Monday I'll have the enviable task of unpacking them all.

I'll need the little electric fan, heat makes me sleepy.
