Kids Are Commie Pinkos?

I have now heard twice a particular spin on this story....More Than 1 in 3 Students Want Gov't Control of Press, Knight Survey Finds.
The spin is from the right, and it goes like this, "High school children are so indoctrinated by liberal teachers that they want government control of the press. They have been taught the the state should control everything. They are being turned into commie pinkos"
Uhm, wrong.
Nope, this is a total misreading of this survey, and I'm sorry, you're not seeing what your own movement is doing to our country. The results of this survey show that high school students find that freedom of the press goes too far, especially in presenting unpopular opinions, who's argument is that? That's right, it's the constant right-wing radio talk show host screed that has been gaining steam ever since the fairness doctrine was dropped twenty years ago.
Fairness doctrine = government control of the press.
So guess what. We allowed more freedom of the press, and what we get is a bunch of whining people saying the press that they use themselves goes to far in promoting unpopular opinion, and needs to be controlled, even going so far to buy up billboards - yet another form of media - to tell us not to believe the liberal media. They put people on the airwaves to tell us that the mainstream media isn't serving them, but they are becoming mainstream themselves.
I remember many years ago Rush Limbaugh saying that he was not a journalist, but I laughed at that, since what he was doing was delivering news with a biased slant. What was new about that? It was just a new way of doing it at the time. Now it's a normal way of getting news for millions of Americans, and has become a mainstream media in its own right. Be careful that you don't abuse your power, for everyone's watching you, now.
Is it any wonder that Air America was launched to try to take back the airwaves? sure, they laughed, but it is the same tactic the right-wingers have used, get in to the field and slowly build, under the radar. It's a quiet revolution.
So the kids. The kids aren't indoctrinated by the schools on the media. Hell, most of them will never get involved with a student newspaper or yearbook. What's happening is they are taking their parent's message. They are hearing their parent's complain about the media and transferring that opinion, mimicking it.
I'd like the concervative talk show hosts to take a look and see what's really going on, and what effect that are having. The funny thing is, the smaller government ideal conservatives once have is being replaced by a nanny-state "we must protect you from..." fervor that could almost be decribed as communist - without the economic backing to do it
What an unpopular opinion.
