Happy Birthday to Patrick ([livejournal.com profile] shadowcub), Rob ([livejournal.com profile] robcelt) and Cris ([livejournal.com profile] slacker_x)!

-----------------------------

Well, We've survived another MacWorld and Steve Jobs Keynote, and I don't have the urge to buy everything in sight. That's good for me, not so good for Apple.

I'd still like to replace my original 5GB iPod, but the iPod shuffle is more of a toy. it would be good for a workout, though when you need something for an hour or so and won't be trying to look for a song.

If they had released the Mac mini a while back, I would have bought that and a nice flat panel instead of my iMac. It's nice for what it is. It has the same specs of the machine I have now. It's probably not going to be the next Mac I get, though. It's sort of the next cube, if they ever continued that modle. I'll probably move up to a G5 in a year or so, though.

It's funny, when I talked to chris tonight, he said he wanted a Mac mini. I was surprised. Now he's not opposed to Macs, but he does chide me for being such a Mac/Apple evangelist.

For those who think that the Mac mini is for the people who are looking for some cheap eMachine, well, their wrong. It is for those who already have a good monitor, and may want to switch, and get away from Windows, and IE and such, or those who might spend a though or so, because you do have to get software and such to make your Mac happy. Still, it's nice to see the company trying to bring the cost of switching down.

As for software, I'll buy Tiger (Mac OSX v10.4) when it comes out, but I'm not really looking at the other offerings with that much glee. I do want the new version of iPhoto, but i don't like that I have to buy all of the other iApps to get it. Pages may be good, but and I hate to say it, Microsoft Word is getting it done right now.

So there it is. The company that gets the most rumors, generates an insane amount of press for it's market share, and does put out a pretty damn good product that I'm still pretty happy to pay for, manages to keep my wallet intact today.

Thanks.

(of course my iBook's battery needs replacing, but that's going to have to wait to see if I have any money after this weekend)

Don't forget.

The Mini is also good for two others things. As a second machine for those of us who already have a Mac. Or, in my case, as a server. With Apache, Postfix and BSD already on the box... I can't buy a cheaper/better web server. And it's teenie tiny.

I'll probably place my order soon. ;)

I've already got an old grey iMac, and newer G4 iMac and an iBook in my 700 sq ft apartment. This doesn't include the Tivo and the Newton. Right now I don't need any more computers in the house.

One day, I might learn how to do the server thing. I do well enough to have them all on one network.

Grey iMac? Ah. Graphite. Cool.

Which Newton? ;) I've got a MP100 (original).

As for needing more computers, actually I've gotten into a kick about removing systems from my setup. Usually I've done this by bringing in a newer smaller unit to replace a larger bigger one. IE what I'm doing with the miniMac.

(As I sit here next to the HUGE TOWER that's becoming our new file server in a few months.)

It's a MP2000 I picked up a few years ago. Hardly ever gets used. I sort of got it on a lark whan everyone started to go Palm crazy and i wanted to get silly with a Newton in hand.

I wish I could do better about making it sync with OSX, but it's kind of clunky that way.

I'm jealous...

Years ago, I wanted an MP2000 or MP2100 so badly. I almost bought the 2100 when I worked at the college as my discount would've brought it down to around $800 (instead of the $1200 it was getting then), but since that was almost 3 weeks salary, that was tough to justify.

But even on Ebay these days, they still get $200 plus. For 8 year old computers! Amazing.

Yeah, Tony said he wanted a MacMini, too! :D
It's a solid, simple little box that makes it a LOT easier to get into the "world of Mac" without such a huge inital investment (well, for those of us w/ spare monitors laying around, I guess). I have to admit - it is hella cute!
