Back when I used to work retail sales, for Sears, Mervyn's and later Target, I'd often be working the closing Christmas Eve shift. Around 6 p.m. we'd make the closing announcement, often having to make it several times to get the last shoppers out of the store. Inevitably a few desperate shoppers would come up to me asking where they could still get a last minute gift since apparently this whole thing just caught up to them.

Given that it was 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve, my answer was usually, "Walgreens".

Of course knowing the wonderful selection they would find at America's drug store, some lucky someone would be getting a gift set of Stetson or Jean Naté Body Splash, as would hundreds of others with their loved ones shopping like zombies at the 24-hour drugstores.

I related this oft-told tale to Chris tonight as we saw a veritable stream of cars slowly leaving the Irving Mall tonight just after 6 p.m., as we were headed to dinner with my sister Laura and her fiancé, Ed.

Tonight as we returned to Chris' home, we passed the Walgreens on Frankford and Midway Rd, the parking lot overflowing with cars.

Who says you aren't getting anything for Christmas?

Its funny you should mention that because thats exactly what happened with us tonight... 6:15 and they still found several stragglers digging in the toys and domestics. I rang out a girl who was getting her little brother the new Antonio Banderas fragrance... I just saw that and thought "Ewwww... I wonder how bad it smells!"
