A little more about marriage...
Sep. 19th, 2003 09:05 amReading up on some more Marriage stuff this morning, I see that Pennsylvania Senator Rich Sanatorium (I love Dan Savage's use of his name for post anal sex froth) has decided to push forward with the constitutional amendment. He hasn't introduced it in the senate - yet, but I think he's waiting for the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruling to give it a little extra push.
I think they are energized by the probability of the Mass. court to allow same-sex marriage. They'll allow it so the can work to kill it on a national level. They want to be able to look at the populous and say, look, the states and the courts can't be trusted to protect our morals (which isn't their job, anyway). We need this amendment to put a stop to it.
I think they are also counting on public sentiment to fall once the Mass. ruling goes through, just like it did when the Texas sodomy laws were struck down. I just think a majority of people just really don't care about either the sodomy or the marriage issues, the negative reaction comes from the subject being brought up at all. I think they just want people to shut up.
Unfortunately for them, this issue will at least carry through through the 2004 elections.

The worst thing about this issue is that every non-thinking person seems to equate it with an attack on
religionChristianity. Which it is not. But those supporting the amendment want to paint it that way, because there are too many people in this country who can't think for themselves, and an emotional appeal works far more wonders than a logical one...
