Quiet weekend for me. No major roadtrips or anything. A lot slower pace than it has been for a while. Friday Night I went to the movies and saw X2 and A Mighty Wind...all for one price! Yes, you have to love megaplexes staffed by teenagers. Yes, they're watching for the other teenagers trying to sneak into the next showing of Daddy Day Care or something equally insipid, but for the thirty-somethings going into a Christopher Guest movie? I think not!

Lunch with Davo, Saturday, was the highlight of the weekend, good conversation, good food at the 59 Diner. then I went to my friends John and Dawn Bland's house in Pearland for dinner and movies. I brought the films, good old Happy Tree Friends and Sordid Lives. Well, that was a bit of an error on my part, because, even though they enjoyed Sordid Lives, Dawn couldn't handle HTF. The other problem is the kids. Cheyenne isn't one yet, so no big deal putting her to bed, but Marshall, the three-year-old, is a different story.

Both the films were for an adult audience, so you have to put Marshall in his room with a few videos of his own. Marshall isn't one to stay cooped up in his room when Uncle Egg is in the house, so it was harder and harder to keep him away from what the grown-ups were watching. I guess I didn't think about this, not having to deal with children in my normal life. I'll have to bring more family-appropriate fare with me next time.

Yesterday I spent cleaning the house, then heading to my parents for Mother's Day. I took laundry, and did a couple of loads there since I know the machines work, as compared to here at Running Rats Apartment Homes. Mom was nice enough to sew a button on a pair of Dockers for me. I can sew a little bit, but not the industrial-strength work needed for a Dockers waistband.

Took Mom and Dad out to dinner at Pappadeaux and had some good shrimp. Of course Mom picks one of the more expensive of the chain restaurants to go to, but still, the food was good.

That and I caught up on some sleep, and some comic books. I just finished February's stack, that's how far behind I am. Been reading [livejournal.com profile] cuttercoon's thesis lately about female characters in the comics and been finding it interesting.

Reminded me of something that my local comic book shop owner said a couple of years ago. He stated that the Wonder Woman merchandise really only sells to the women and the gay boys. He goes on to mention that he thinks that the gay men look up to her because they want to be her. At that time, I let that pass.

Alright, I've been buying WW since the revamp in 1986, some 200 issues ago. I also own a few WW action figures. I do not, however own the tiara and bracelets set, thank you. She's a decent character, and with the correct writer, can be very good. She and her supporting cast have been hurt badly by DC comics various retconns (and now her mother was the WW2 Wonder Woman? Don't get me started on Troia/Wonder Girl) and of course, bad writers. I don't think they have an easy time soliciting people for the book.

And did I like the '70s TV series? Absolutely.

Needless to say I don't think I'm any more or less gay for picking up Wonder Woman than I am for picking up The Flash or any other tight costumed male superhero. In fact, why would a superheroine have any extra appeal to me? Flawed thinking there, TJ.

Now I have been picking up Marvel's The Rawhide Kid. Kind of a pandering book really. I've only read the first two issues and to tell the truth, it's boring. Little innuendo, some stereotypical jokes, the fake coyness of is he or isn't he that would have been more fun if they had never said anything in the first place, but of course each issue comes stamped with the largest "For Mature Readers Only" stamp I've ever seen. They really are using this book to get notice. I'm really buying it for the hope that they will realize there is acceptance and a desire to have more positive gay characters in comics (yes, I know Northstar is out there). We'll see if it works. This isn't that great of a trial balloon.

I guess I should have moved my subscription to another shop...but I'm a creature of habit, so I still shop there, despite TJ's asshole nature (and he's good enough to hold the action figures I want when they come in). I guess he's figured me out now, after seeing a few issues of The Rawhide Kid go by. As long as he keep s his mouth shut, we'll be better off. I could have moved my subscription to Phoenix Comics a few years ago, especially that John Bland and Tank have both worked at Phoenix, but I never did, and they are closed now.

If we only had Zeus Comics down here.

Zeus world domination coming soon! MWhahahahahaha!

We do have straight men that buy Wonder Woman. I don't care so much for the current writing team, but they'll be gone in another 3 issues.

I did like Jimenez' run, though.

One of the best parts about having an open minded gay and straight staff is that we don't care if you're gay, straight, furry or whatever.

Hi! Saw you on my friends list....

ANYWAYS.

I too loved the TV show - still do, Linda Carter, in that costume? HAWT. VERY attractive. Ok, not dating material for me, but still worth looking at.

:-)

All I want to know is...

Q: Who would win this fight, Wonder Woman vs. Isis?

A: Any horny straight guy.

So when would it be safe to start bugging you about feedback on that script I emailed you last month? ;X)

I read Rawhide Kid with some reservations. Hell, I read Rawhide Kid with a lot reservations. I knew that "gay" was going to be wordplay and innuendo. I knew that it was probably going to be presented in a humorous light. I knew we weren't going to see him presented in a serious light, as a serious hero. Granted, my shop missed putting issue two in my box, and has since sold out... *grump* But having read 1, 3-5, I suspect it's only more of the same. The short summary is that it could have been far worse. Yes, he was swishy and campy (jesus, catch that dressing gown he's wearing at the end of issue 1), but it was harmless for the most part. I mean he acts like most of the guys I hang out with--bears, mind you--when we get to playing around. Having endured the entire miniseries now, I find myself luquewarm on the whole thing.

So far as gay leading characters out there go these days, my money is on Northstar. Now that the "shock" value of his coming out has evaporated, the current Uncanny X-Men writing team is handling it very responsibly.

Re: Wonder Woman
He goes on to mention that he thinks that the gay men look up to her because they want to be her.

I think there may be an identity transfer there, for one reason or another, from spectator to character. If you took queer theory, and wrapped it around the idea of the super hero/heroine--the secret identity, passive (civilian) vs agressive (hero) personalities--you could argue a case (and a similar paper is on my post-thesis slate. I just have to sit down and write it). I think the femenine coding of the super heroine indeed appeals to certain classes of gay men--those comfortable enough with their gendered makeup to let it mingle between the male and female barriers, read: queens. There's almost a sense of gendered play involved with a male openly identifying with a female character--the same way gay men often use gender juxtoposition (calling a male friend "she") as a term of endearment...

(...I think I may have just started my pre-write activity on the paper in question. *grins*)

Some friends and I recently watched a few episodes of Wonder Woman. We came up with an idea for a drinking game - have a drink every time someone gets chloroformed!
