No turkey?
Nov. 26th, 2002 12:30 amMom and I went round and round about Thanksgiving plans yesterday. Basically, she doesn't want to cook anything. My dad has to go to work that night and my sister - well, she probably won't be dropping into any Thanksgiving or Christmas celebration at our house for some time.
My mom, for the last umpteen years, has been the master of the entirely microwaved Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey (not a whole turkey, obviously) dressing, peas lightly heated cranberry sauce - the whole dang thing. Totally takes the specialness out of the whole thing. Of course many many years ago we used to travel to Dallas to the grandmother's houses - that was more special.
The microwave changed my mother's life. She's a homemaker. In fact, she has a degree from Winthrop University in South Carolina to prove it. The microwave came into our house one year and the real, fancy cooking stopped. Suddenly, if it wasn't microwaved, it wasn't in the house. I baked and cooked more than my mom did.
Now she doesn't even go that far. Lately she's been ordering Pizza and Taco Bell for my father and herself. I understand that she doesn't want to make to big of a fuss for just the two of them - but this isn't even a microwaved dinner anymore - and she's home all day!!
So now I'm trying to decide what to do. I live 50 miles away from my parents (used to commute that distance, so it's not big deal) and I see them all the time. She's not planning anything for thanksgiving, she want's to go out to eat - Denny's here we come.
Two different sets of friends have asked me to go to thier house. I may go. it doesn't seem to bother my sister that she doesn't show up to these non special events.
Just some effort, please?
