(DISCLAIMER: This is not meant to make fun or take lightly the situation occurring in Iraq. It is just a ribbing of the media and their treatment of reporting this conflict)

(Alright, the real explanation of where this is coming from)

WAR! started at work on Friday as one of the coworkers asked me, “Did you watch the war last night?”

Seriously. I immediately looked at him with a look of, “You’re serious, right? It’s not really a TV show.” So I immediately started riffing on how this semi-fictional TV show called WAR! would actually be promoted. If you could think of an announcer in a big BOOMING voice talking about the show WAR!, you get the idea.

The funny thing is that the fictional, overblown idea of the reality TV show, and what's really being put on TV for us buy the networks and cable news channels isn't very different.

This carries through the “shock and awe’ campaign that afternoon. We were checking news through the day, and there seemed to be a bit of glee from the correspondents that they were able to capture these images on television. It’s like they have been waiting for weeks for “shock and awe” and were even disappointed the first night when we didn’t unleash it the then. “Shock and awe” has become such a catch phrase, that it seemed to become one trademarked word, Shockandawe™.

As I explained this to my buddies on the road trip, it became the big dark-humor joke of the trip. Of course, with four guys in a car, naturally there were many comments made, and we're all sarcastic to boot. This spread to others in Kingsville as we explained the oddness of the TV coverage compared to the actual, more sobering, events.

All weekend long, nothing to do with the actual conflict, something odd would happen, or someone would comment, and then some one would tag it with “…on the next episode of WAR!”

i.e. Billy gets mayonnaise on his hamburger and is disappointed, on the next...WAR!

Everyone was in shock…and awe.

And so it goes.

It isn't on television anymore, but the old disney series "Dinosaurs" had a VERY sarcastic two-part episode(s) about the Gulf War, entitled "Nuts To WAR!".

The description from one episode guide says: The dinosaurs who walk on all fours encroach on the swamplands and the pistachio-nut supply of the "normal" dinosaurs...and that means WAR. Earl, Roy, and Charlene pose as entertainers and rush to the front to retrieve Robbie, because it looks like this war thing is getting a little bit out of hand.

The episode was a thinly veiled commentary on Bush Sr.'s Gulf War over oil in the Middle East. This episode was one of the reasons why the series was so well loved by those of us who watched it. The fact that here was a TV show willing to buck the trend and speak their views regardless of what the network said/did. Plus seeing Muppets in drag was amusing too!

Dinosaurs was a good show.

Personally I'm waiting to see if "South Park" will do anything about it. They're currently in a new show cycle, and they seem to have a knack for quick turn-around on their episode topics.

I saw most of the stuff that happened on Saturday night when the US/British patrol was in position for 4 hours against a tank. I swear to you, I had flashbacks to old Monty Pythons skits since the newscaster was British ans was asking the troops questions like "Do you feel safe here?" and "Do you know who is in the tank yet?"

I agree with you about people thinking the War being like a reality show.... it's very disturbing.
