Tragic.

Oh goodness. The Space Shuttle Columbia has broken up re-entering the atmosphere over Texas. 7 astronauts were on board. I didn't even know that there was one up right now.

Now they are warning Dallas citizens that debris may fall on them. My God!

I remember when moon landings, and shuttle launches were a facination for me and many others, especially living here in Houston. The Challenger explosion was a major event to me.

Columbia was the oldest in the fleet. I remember doing a Science Fair project on Shuttle technology in Jr. High. I had plastic models of Columbia and all.

This is very sad.

For whatever reason, I thought of you as events unfolded...original reports said that it happened over Houston. After the Challenger disaster, the shuttle program was paralyzed for years; the quest for exploration and knowledge is being replaced by budget and profit. The net and all of it's elements would probably not exist today if it were not for the technology developed during the early days of the space race.

Yes, the Space Program hasn't been as inspirations as it used to be. It will probably be a while before they get another shuttle up there.
Still, the exploration is now more in scientific experiments and chemistry rather than finding new places and things. Both are important.
