Last Sunday, feeling nostalgic for the city I'll be leaving, I took some pictures around Hermann Park and at Rice University. Sam Houston, Texas General and later, after gaining independence from Mexico, became Texas president. Houston is pointing towards the San Jacinto Battlefield, about 20 miles away, where Texas won defeating the army of Santa Ana.

One of the interestin things about Houston is that it stays green for the winter, at least moreso than other cities. Between the evergreen pine trees and the Live Oaks, many of Houston's trees never loose their leaves. Of course this has been an unusually warm winter with beautiful clear skies and high temperatures in the mid 70's. Perfect to get out to the park and paddle the lake in a paddle boat.

Clicking on the links above (The picture number or my name) will take you to more Hermann Park and Rice University photos on Flickr.

Thanks for the pictures of Rice, I've not been since my sister graduated from there in 1992.

Some great pics, but I have to say, the one that really struck me was the stairwell -- great shot!

Thanks! The rice campus is really great because all the buildings have a unified look to them, and there's all the trees around.

I'm trying to get better at photography, and catch a good one now and again, but more often I'm just clicking the button.

Is such a beautiful campus! My father got his first doctorate at Rice back in the early 1970s. I've only been to Rice once; about six months before he died; he always meant to take me down there and show me around; but never took the time.

The back end of campus could use a little more landscaping and all, but yes, it's very organized and well kept. You should see the mess of my alma mater, UH, where they started with buildings with red tile roofs and white limestone, but quickly gave up on that and have buildings of brick and concrete and tin, even. It's a big mess.

I love walking around the campus at dark - somehow everything seems to come alive when the sun goes down.

It's a very unique college campus - one of the first things I noticed when I visited for the first time was how "uncluttered" the whole place was. It was nice to be able to breath, unlike USC, the campus I visited right before Rice.

It's a great campus. The "deed restrictions", if you will do keep the look uniform, thought there's some very different styles of architecture. I've always thought it was nicer than most. I remember going to the University of Oklahoma for a visit and it's similar, as all buildings have to be in red brick, but there's many variations.
