Well, things are heating up at work...not in layoffs, thankfully, that seems to be over for now, but in how the re-organization will go, and how three different groups will become one by the end of the year. It's going to be a monumental task, and one that's going to tax all of us, and I can assure you that not everyone will be along for the whole ride. that's talk for another time though.

Hans emailed me later in the afternoon today and asked me if I wanted to see a preview of a new film. The film was Good Night, and Good Luck. a film directed by George Clooney, who also stars in a supporting role. the movie is about famed journalist Edward R. Murrow, now in the new media of Television, using it's power to expose Senator Joseph McCarthy in the 1950's.

The movie mixes in film of McCarthy and the House Un-American activities Committee along with the actors at the New York offices of CBS News. It showed the difficulty of exposing an unpopular truth where corporate sponsorship is a part of the news gathering business, and a battle for truth and free speech against a force that is painting anyone who opposes it as unpatriotic.

As you might gather, there's a lot of parallels with our current situation.

For me it was interesting to see a little bit of this legendary journalist brought to life, as I have heard so much about him. He not only made television journalism, he also showed what it could be, but frustratingly couldn't always get what he wanted, or had to give the network what it wanted to be able to have the freedom to try to produce and present the stories of real substance. Today, I doubt we have anyone like him actually working in television. The medium won't allow it.

It's in black and white, and nothing blows up, and there's a soundtrack of standards, so you know it won't be a box-office blockbuster, but it's definitely a a good movie not only for history buffs, but to see some good, solid acting and some decent drama. It will be on the art house circuit this fall.
