The weekend was a good one...long and hot. Of course that sounds dirty, but isn't. Really, it was just another good weekend in Dallas with Chris. One of the big things is we finally set down the dates that Chris and I will be going to the Bay Area. August will find us there, and in time for Hairrison. Now we're trying to decide if it's worth getting tickets or just going to the street festival.

Meanwhile, back in the past, Saturday found us doing domestic duties. Well, Chris ([livejournal.com profile] f__k) was, as we bought some flowers for the yard. Chris had a plan and all of that. I did plant a couple, and eventually helped wash Chris' car. I probably did more watching TV than actual work, but come on, it was 100 degrees! (Another trowel would have helped too).

I did watch some Logo and some of the Live 8 broadcasts. Logo was mostly movies, and Live 8 was pretty much ruined by the horrible coverage by MTV. It's sad that they couldn't let the event, and the music speak for itself, and had to try to brand it with their VJ's who just showed how dumb they are. It didn't help that MTV didn't seem to know what was going on where at what time. MTV/Viacom has several cable outlets, they could have dedicated one to each city, or at least TV to Philly, VH1 to London and another channel to flip to the other cities when English-friendly acts appeared.

Perhaps it was just the way it was presented here, but it seems like the concert wasn't as meaningful as it could have been. Maybe it was the acts, many of them aging, not quite as relevant as they once were, that made the whole thing seem more like a nostalgia tour than an actual call to action. Perhaps it was the fact that the action that viewers were supposed to take wasn't as visible as a a toteboard with dollars, as people were urged to contact their leaders about urging aid for Africa. It will be interesting to see what impact it will have - especially since the US has actually raised some contributions for African programs in the last few years. How much more?

Saturday night we went out to dinner with John ([livejournal.com profile] txredneck) and his partner Tom ([livejournal.com profile] evilcreamsicle) who was in town visiting from New Jersey. I had never met Tom, but we've talked for a while about long distance relationships - his much longer than mine. After dinner, where we were joined by Michael ([livejournal.com profile] mrh745i) We went back home and talked for a few hours and Joey decided to be real friendly with Tom, shedding all over his shirt.

Tom hopefully will tell his story about the 22 year-old from to the rest of LJ someday.

Sunday morning meant a sort of surprise visit from [livejournal.com profile] bearpawly, then in the afternoon Chris and I were invited to a pool party at friends of John's ([livejournal.com profile] jtjtjt23). We stayed at the party a little later than we thought we would (and I geeked out talking about the new porn prevention law with the Bear.net webmaster, Dale), and we sort of missed being able to go to Kaboom! Town, the fireworks show in Addison! (you have to add the exclamation point to the name of the town, it's required by law). We also managed to catch a late night showing of the Passion of Joan of Arc on TV. The Chorale recently performed the musical work, timed with the silent film, and I unfortunately missed it due to Tax Season.

Monday was a chill day for Chris and I, eventually having dinner with Kenny ([livejournal.com profile] kennydoug71) before I had to drive back home. As I drove home, night fell and getting out of the city I found that many of the fireworks stands were doing brisk business. All along the route home I saw fireworks, some in controlled spectaculars, others in little spurts, and even a fire truck trying to put out a house that look like it caught the bad end of a sparkler or M-80 or something.

I was also listening to NPR on Sirius as they were presenting authors who had written books about revolutionary heroes. Since I have read a book on George Washington, and currently on Thomas Jefferson, I guess I was very interested in listening to the unheard tales, and how close those men came to losing it all. It's worth thinking about, and defending our freedoms so we can celebrate more independence days.

I'm not sure Ben Franklin was making the continent free for pool parties, but maybe he would be proud that we have the chance to strive for the best for us and the world.
