When You Open Pandora's Box...
Jul. 3rd, 2005 09:47 amNASA is set tonight to watch it's space probe, named Deep Impact, fulfill it's mission. Besides the fact that naming something Deep Impact makes me think of the movie with the meteor, and make me long for having Morgan Freeman as president, this mission should be rather interesting.
The impactor part of the probe has separated and is hurtling towards the comet where it will make impact sometime around 1am Central time tonight. It's not sure what it will look like from Earth, but the comet is visible in the night sky and will be visible to everyone but those on the east coast when the impact occurs.
NASA/JPL scientists have likened the idea to chipping away at the comet to see what is inside as a geologist would use a pick to see what was in a rock. The sensor part of the probe will take readings of the remains.
My only question is, are we ready to deal with the frozen space vampires that will be released when we open up this comet?
