O, Canada!

Congratulations Canada, you did it. The House of Commons voted 158 to 133 to legalize same-sex marriage. It just needs approval in the Senate, which could happen in days.

Is it just me, or does Canada seem to represent the type of tolerant country we all thought the US would be? It seems like the US was once the leader in civil and human rights, but we have backpedaled so far due to poor leadership playing to the least common denominator. It's too bad that there aren't leaders here that really inspire our country to do better, and to be better.

It's not just in gay rights, it works in so many other areas. Americans are uninspired, and it seems like the momentum has really dropped out of our country, while others seem do be taking the lead in the economy, in jobs, and in providing the best for all of it's citizens.

Sure, there's a group of Canadian Conservatives who already are looking to bring up the issue in a future session, hoping to bring the question up for public referendum, but that seems unlikely, now that most provincial and territorial governments had already made marriage equality legal. There are already many couples legally wed in their provinces who will see their marriages nationally recognized.

Canada and Spain are vying to be the third country to legalize same-sex unions after Spain's upper house sent the legislation back to the lower house last week.

Meanwhile, US President George W. Bush continues to work on firing up his supporters by calling for an amendment to the constitution to stop marriage equality, trying to hide his failures in other areas.
