Whine and Cheese
Oct. 28th, 2004 08:00 amThis is probably going to sound whiney. In fact, it is whiney. It's a big whiney kid type rant from someone who finally figured our that under current circumstances, he isn't going to get what he wants for Christmas.
What I want is a 40GB iPod.
Yeah, many of you know that I have a 5GB iPod bought just days after they went on sale. This was back in 2001 when I had something called savings. When I didn't live in Houston and I didn't have so many bills. My life has changed a lot. Sure, it's changed for the better, but it's sure more expensive.
So I watched as the new, rather ugly U2-branded iPod, and the destined-to-show-your-porn-collection-while-you-use-the touch-wheel-one-handed iPodPhoto were introduced. Both are somewhat unnecessary to me, I still find my small, old original iPod unworthy as I want to put my larger than 20 GB music collection in a shiny, smaller box.
However, the $7.43 in my checking account says otherwise.
Mind you, payday is tomorrow. Sure, I'm eating Easy Mac this morning for lack of anything else in the house, but I'll make my rent payment. I'm not going into debt, I won't have my power shut off, and as God is my witness, I shall never go hungry again!
Go on...
Of course there's an X-factor. Soon our company's sharesave will mature, and we've been paying into it for a while. The stock purchase program was to have us buy the stock at a discount, set at the then low price of $15.00, but now, after scandal and customers leaving, the price of our stock is $10.39. Luckily we can take the value of the money we put in and not purchase the stock. It won't be a lot, but it could be a help.
So I'm whining about trivial things. The problem is I need to be better about my finances, but this is something for another, longer post.
Tonight I will go listen to Augusten Burroughs read from his new book, Magical Thinking, and buy it, on credit. Is it the best way to go? Would it be the better way to go? Well, I'd rather pay as I went, like our government should do, but this is a special event, and I'll make an exception. The book costs $23.99, but I'd pay more for a signed copy if I waited until after tonight's event.
The iPod I can wait on. Hell, give it a few months and the price may go down, or perhaps I'll manage my money a little better.
Excuse the whine...now back to the Mac and Cheese.
