In the News
Sep. 27th, 2004 08:00 amJust some news tidbits
Apparently some Australians, upset by the government's stance on same-sex marriage have decided to create their own kingdom. Submitting an Declaration of Independence to the government, the kingdom is a small, uninhabited island on the coral reef. Emperor Dale Anderson looks to create a territory for gays and lesbians, and create stamps and gay dollars, plus offer marriages. Australia's government so far hasn't recognized the new territory.
News Story and the Country's Website
Other news: The whole CBS News debacle seems to be finally playing out, but it really shows how little people pay attention to the old-style network news (when Bill O'Reiley tried to tell a non challant John Stewart that his show is both important, and watched by stoners, you know these guys are miffed about losing their importance). It's obvious that people are looking for news in new spaces and places.
Still, I feel that the GOP has uses the Dan Rather issue, with the faked documents, to try to discredit the media. It's not surprising that Republicans don't trust the liberal media, we've had years of radio talk show hosts (also media) pushing the thought that the media is liberal, but really, it's just another instance of a group looking for media that preserves their point of view. This is nothing new, especially when you have a media that must respond to viewership and advertisers to survive. This is probably the biggest reason that the blogoshpere is erupting right now.
So the GOP is now trying to convince moderates not to watch network news as well. The less potential voters watch news (except for Republican approved Fox News), the less they may see where policies have failed, and the situation in Iraq is disintegrating, helping George W. Bush's message that everything is alright. I kind of wonder where he's getting his news from.
Right-Wingers are shocked that CBS hasn't fired Dan Rather yet, but really, that would be more damming to the news division. Rather will step down, probably next year, allowing a cleaner break. CBS's ratings have been poor for a while, so there's no big loss to keep Rather on the air, and save face.
Oh, and I saw A Dirty Shame with Kip (
scarabbear) on Saturday. It's funny, but don't expect a great plot. It's like a big South Park style sex comedy. Go for it!
