Culture Clash
Aug. 12th, 2003 09:20 amHmm. There's a lot going on in my head, but it's all kind of fuzzy and isn't coming out in a coherent post...so I guess it will have to wait. Work is busy, but unfortunately I'm getting no big thrill about it...even though I'm working on another video project. I guess what I don't like is that the purpose of the video is to introduce our Office to the Denver office that's merging with us. I just don't like the heavy-handed way that upper management is trying to force our corporate culture on them. Really, corporate culture should come organically. Our Austin office that's closing had a different culture than the Houston one, and it was never a problem. I've already heard from trainers who've traveled to denver that they totally resent having to merge with us and give up their identity.
We even have a high executive committee for the merger - The Culture Coalition. Screaming Amy said it sounded like a Culture Club tribute band. Here's my favorite part, they put Assistant vice president Mary Nell on the team to produce these videos for Denver (Officially their called the "Howdy Neighbor! Videos" -UGH). Mary Nell sets up one meeting for all of the teams that will be producing a video, and I am but one of those people. I am also the lowest-ranking person in the room. She turns to me and says, "You've done videos before, why don't you take over this project." That was it, she gave it all to me, no responsibility on her part (except for some censorship rights, I'm sure). Talk about passing the buck.
So now I'm in charge. I love having to manage a group of higher than peers. (Well, actually, I kind of do.)
The joy of forced corporate synergy. Now I can't wait for the problems that will start when we move their retirement accounts onto our platform. They'll be thrilled to see our platform is still a trial by the data vendor, and we're still testing it for them...live, with real customers and real money. I have an account right now that officially should be 4 different accounts, and we can't figure out who's money is whose. Now are you ready to invest? Sure you are.
Is there a wonder why I enjoy my job so?

Otherwise, I wish for the best for my baby, Chris (
oakleycub) (I know, such the name dropper) as he goes on his job interview today. Go get them, babe!
And I just ripped my pants out, just now. DAMN!
