Last night my car, the 2000 Nissan XTerra, turned over 100,000 miles. It happened taking my parents to dinner.

Photographic evidence:
A long, long way.
I've had this car exactly 3 years, to the week.

I've given it numerous oil changes, a set of new tires and brakes, but that's about it. It's been a really reliable car. I need to go get it inspected today for it's new sticker.

I really do drive everywhere. The car has actually only been as far as Lubbock, but has been over much of Texas, and into Louisiana, Oklahoma, and unfortunately, Arkansas. The car before this actually made it to St Louis one year. This one though, has made more trips to Dallas than any of the others.

What really drove the car's mileage up was the commute I used to have. From my place in Conroe, it was a full 100 miles round-trip to work and back. I now live just a few miles from work, so the wear and tear has decreased in mileage, but increased to to the shitty condition of many of Houston's streets are these days. Pothole heaven. Still, the car takes it pretty well.

I bought the car at about the time my credit was just getting rebuilt from the hell of credit card debit and college loans that I was just working to pay off. I couldn't afford to move then. The payment was astronomical because I owed more on my trade-in, a 1997 Kia Sportage that it was worth. Two car payments in one. I had to trade the Kia in, the car had gone out of warranty and was breaking down, badly, at 70,000 miles.

I refinanced the XTerra last year, but still, it's a large payment each and every month. Two more years to go.

Of course, In Houston, as with most of the western cities, you can't not have a car. Public transportation is shoddy if not nonexistent, and the city itself is so spread out that you spend 20 minutes in a car just to get a loaf of bread sometimes.

Certainly once you've bought an SUV, it's hard to go back. I don't know what I would get next. Hopefully I won't have to for a while. This car has been the most reliable one I've had yet. Most of them have crapped out on me due to my hard driving.

Have a good Memorial Day, folks!
