Ritual Sacrifice
Apr. 7th, 2003 09:37 amThis week is going to have more of a fraternity feel to it. Last night I attended the initiation ritual for the seven new members. I do have to say, ritual is a performance. don't do this for us, the old farts, sure we know all of the parts, and we will grumble about your performance and such, but for pete's sake, PRACTICE. Again, not for the Alumni, but for the new guys. This ritual is for them. Show them that you care about the messages, the meanings and the experience. It shows that the fraternity is important, and what it stands for is meaningful.
Still, I got to eat way too much at Bennegian's. Good meal.
It's easy to dismiss the fraternal experience, all stupid pranks and paying for friends. My fraternity is somewhat different. It's base reason is to serve the band. There's no house, it's coed, and there's a purpose (actually, there's 5, but I won't go into it here). I've met some fantastic people here. I've probably outgrown it, but it's still nice to drop in from time to time and see what's going on.
This Friday I'm traveling to Waco. Yes, Waco. To attend district convention. Having been a district officer several years ago, I get asked back to do certain jobs. I'll be advising a committee that picks the top chapter in the district. My experience with this award, including my chapter's winning of it while I was active, will help the committee make the best choice.
It's nice to feel wanted. Unfortunately, this means another hotel room, and the expense. it was nice having an entire weekend with no travel, little expense and the ability to get a few domestic chores done. Well, I burn another vacation day, and get to help out the youth of America.
Yeah, whatever.
