Today is the day of our baseball draft. I've played fantasy baseball for several years, and last year, about half of my team and I created a league. I came in 5th out of ten last year. Not my best showing.

This year it's head to head weekly matches (each team "plays" the other team for a week, trying to get the best stats in several categories for "wins"). The weekly matches mean you pair up against another player rather than just playing on pure stats alone for the entire season. makes it a lot more fun when you have competition that way.

There's money on the line. Everyone pays in $30 and the pool is split between the regular season winner and the first, second and third place winners in the playoffs.

We'll be drafting at Texadelphia, enjoying some cheesesteaks and beer. Nine guys and one girl, Sandee, the one who's leaving - but she played last year, so she gets the option to play this year. as the beer flows, the later rounds of the draft get interesting.

You actually have to keep up with baseball, you have to know when players get hurt, when there not playing well, and when you need to drop one guy for another. Amy (yes, yelling Amy) played last year, and lost. She didn't keep up enough on the game. She's not playing this year.

Still, our league is 10 people, and I had people begging to get in this year from other teams at work.

I've been doing my research, checking into stats and such.

Personally, my strategy is to blend the best players with some eye-candy. this is harder than you might think, since you've only got 18 players (we had 20 last year, and it was too many), many of the other league "owners" are looking for the best players, too. Still, I have high hopes for Eric Gagne, Lance Berkman from my favorite team, Jeff Bagwell, Jason Kendall, and a nod to Mike Hampton, who despite playing for the despised Atlanta Braves, still is totally hot.

No, Ken Caminitti doesn't play anymore, he's a drug addict, and in jail.

Still, if I want to be competitive, these guys still have to play. Amy took the strategy of only picking guys she thought were hot last year, and they lost, and she has bad taste.

My team name this year...The Other Team. 18 guys are playing for it.
