Little New Here

Out with the parents again last night. Had to rescue Dad as he was working on the new house and his car battery died. Since it was already seven o'clock, everything in Texas is pretty much closed except for Target, and Wal*Mart. Since Target doesn't carry car batteries, it was off to Wally World.
The parking lot was full of white trash. I'm sorry that I can be so judgmental sometimes, but man, I just can't stand going to Wal*Mart. There's just such an unwashed masses feeling there. I dropped dad off and went off to fill up the car and put some air in one of my tires that seems to have a slow leak. A few minutes later, Dad had his new battery, and I had avoided having to wash with the rest in the Ganges.
My Dad has a lot of tools. Tools for damn well everything. He pulled out three different implements and had the new battery in in no time. This is actually one of the easier things you can do with your car (I personally have put new oil in, aired up tires, and changed an air-filter, but that's about it). i usually require help for anything else. I've never changed my oil. I could actually get under my X-Terra, but I couldn't get under other cars I've driven, so I've never done it. i leave it up to the people at Lickety Lube or something.
I'm lucky that I have a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a hammer.
We shuffled off to Chili's and had a nice dinner, with Mom chattering away. Chili's had apparently run out of napkins, and the waitress apologized for the use of the cheapest napkins Kroger had to offer.
Mom was talking about the upcoming election, and happened to mention how she didn't want to watch the Democratic convention. Truly, it's very, very easy to miss the entire thing these days. There's so many other channels, or you can rent a movie. There's more than three networks these days.
I mentioned that I thought it was a sham for the Republicans to schedule many moderate voices for their convention when they aren't the people making the platform for the party. While I like McCain and Pataki and Guliani, and yes, even Schwarzenegger, they have less to do with what the party is pushing than conservative Democrat Zel Miller, who will also speak at the Republican convention (he's not running, what does he care).
Dad sort of rolled his eyes and I unleashed my diatribe. I just think he doesn't want to here it as Mom and I go back and forth. Mom parroted the latest talk-show information asking for a more "conservative" voice to be on (come on, you have Bush). I said that you don't want that. The Moderate base of the party is crumbling since you've been pandering to the Christian right so much this year. if you want converts, they come from the center. You put on Rick Santorum or Bill Frist up there and suddenly their talking about creating a Theocracy and the undecided vote tunes out. Moving to the center is sound, but I hope people can see through the showmanship to see who's really driving the party.
You know, it's not like the conventions actually pick the candidates anymore. There's really little use for them now. their just one week long political ad. Maybe it's time to junk them (since their big targets, anyway), and spend the money more wisely.
And we didn't even talk about the Federal Marriage amendment's defeat.
Nothing much else. The parents are leaving for a week, heading up for Dallas as Dad gets some training in and Mom...sits around. Nothing much new there.
And nothing much new here.

Date: 2004-07-19 08:59 pm (UTC)I can change a battery. If I *REALLY* wanted to, I could change the oil. Don't ask me how on my new car though. :P
I thought I was the stereotypical gay man who knew nothing about cars... until I met Hunter.
When I met him, he hadn't the slightest clue of what was wrong with his car. I didn't feel so bad then. ;)
Just last weekend we got in the car and I could hear the squeaking of his engine and I told him that he should have them check his belts when he changes the oil next. (Course, Hunter did once drive on the same batch of oil for 22,000 miles. Yes, 22K! And it was within the first year he owned the car... Ugh. Even *I* cringed.)
