A Possible Conversation, A Day Or Two Ago
Oct. 3rd, 2005 10:15 pmHey, I'm glad you could stop by.
I know this might be a little much, but you know, you've been a good friend. You've done a lot for me and my people for the last few years, and provided a lot of assistance. I really can't thank you enough. Sometimes I think I ask a lot of you, so I hope you'll listen to me as I need to ask you for one more favor. I need you're loyalty on this.
You see, I have a big job I'd like to recommend you for. Some would call it the job of a lifetime, maybe even a job for a lifetime. It's a big deal, very important to us. Now it's not really how well you do the job, it's actually that we want you to slow down some things that are going on there. See, we just got a guy there who's going to do some of that. He's going to be able to deflect some of the issues from actually being brought up, and that's a good thing. Still, if anything does come up, we want you there to stop any changes from being made.
Now I know it's odd, you were out to actually locate some candidates for the job, but now here I am asking you to do it. Well, the names you gave me, they were fine, but when we passed a few along to committee, well, they had some strong reactions to some of them. I didn't like that. I want this to be so smooth that no one knows what hit them, you know? That's where you come into play.
See, people don't know about you. Sure they know that you work for me, but that's OK. They don't expect me to send someone up for the job that I don't like. Heck, I love putting my pals in my circles, but I'm getting off topic. You see, the less they know about you, the less they'll be prepared for the interview. They won't have anything to grill you on but that same "blah blah blah" nonsense they spouted out a few weeks ago.
They'll ask the same pat questions, and all you have to do is give them some noncommittal answer. Normally this wouldn't work. In any business if you just tried to sidestep the question they would refuse to hire you, hands down. Still, here, it took a long time trying to sideswipe questions and prove I was qualified, but not say anything, to get my job. It's the way the game is played here. Just keep talking until they get tired of you, and it's likely they won't notice that you hadn't said anything at all.
Now I know that you may be a little scared of going up against this group. Sure, a trial lawyer might have more of a polish for this kind of performance, but I think you'll do fine. We'll get you some people to coach you in what to say, and more importantly, what not to say, and everything should go smoothly. The idea is to give them nothing to find fault in, so they can't vote you down.
Of course, one thing you already do know is that these guys love to hear themselves talk. You should let that happen. The more they go one, the bigger fools they make of themselves, and they tend to forget to actually ask you anything. It's all a show and if you let them be the stars, you'll get the job.
I'll tell you, i don't envy you. It will be a rough time ahead, everything will be scrutinized, but the job's one that's important to me, and to the cause. Heck, they helped me out a few years back, but me and several others just don't like some of the decisions they make, and now's our chance to change than and build a legacy.
I thank you for coming in today. Again, I thank you for being loyal to me, and to us. Just know that this will all be hitting the news once it's released, so I want you to be prepared, OK? I know I've never asked you to be in the spotlight like this before.
Well, I got to go. Tommy keeps calling about his problems and he just won't seem to understand that I'm trying to ignore him right now. There's been enough things to fix lately.
