I've had my old iPod since I bought it in November 2001. When I bought it, I was one of the very few to have one, and being a Mac user, one of the few that had a computer compatible with it for it was several months before they introduced the models compatible with Windows PC's. I felt very proud and nerdy-superior for a while. Now I go out to the park to take a walk and I see all of these other people walking around with their iPods and suddenly I'm not so special anymore.

Still, I guess everyone just joined me! Yes, I'm that damned important!

Yeah, whatever. Really, it is one of the better gadgets I've ever bought, but my music collection on the computer quickly, and easily outgrew the 5GB capacity of my old iPod, and I longed for a new, sleeker, smaller model. One much like Chris had gotten as he had turned in his 10GB model in for a 40GB on. Of course he bought the little replacement insurance deal with his, so he got the 40GB quite easily.

Well, recently Chris saw one of the 40GB iPod photo models on sale and he couldn't pass it up, so now I'm in possession of his old 40GB iPod. I'm really, really happy that he saw fit to let me have this toy, which he had to wipe because it was set up for his windows machine. I probably won't be able to expect a birthday gift or even a Christmas gift this year, right? Still, I do "share" a lot of my music with Chris, filling his iPod in the process, so that has to be some tradeoff, right?

So tonight when I went out for my walk, and in fact for the last few nights, I've been using the old iPod. Why? I haven't quite gotten the music folder ready in iTunes. Tags are missing and names are wrong and all that, so I don't want to transfer that over to the new device, so I've been cleaning up the 3564 songs in my library, currently. This won't even fill up the 40GB, but was a lot more than the old 5GB could handle. Plenty of room to grow and let me find more new music.

The great thing is that the last couple of years there's been a lot of good new music. Rarely is it the stuff being played on over the air radio, but it's out there if you're looking for it, and iPods, for all the criticism they've been taking for isolating people from one another, encourage people to find their own music and build more independent music collections, rather than what is being fed by radio. Of course there is the problem of legal vs. non legal music files, but that's best left for another debate.

I never got around to naming the 5GB iPod. It was so new at the time, I didn't think of being that clever. No iBear, or iJebus, or iWhatever. I also don't think Chris' old 40 ever had a name, but if it develops a personality, we'll see what comes of it. if I ever get the tunes ready for it.
