I saw yesterday this quote from comedian Chris Rock regarding the Oscars splashed across the Drudge Report:

"Come on, it's a fashion show. What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars? Show me one. And they don't recognize comedy, and you don't see a lot of black people nominated, so why should I watch it?"

Of corse Drudge, to draw more readers made it into a gay snub by throwing up a headline stating "Chris Rock: Only Gays Watch Oscars". I haven't seen that exact quote, and it that was his intention, I'd be a bit surprised. Still, members of the academy are wanting Rock, who will be the host of this year's Oscar broadcast removed from the show for the remarks, made to Entertainment Weekly magazine.

Obviously Oscar producers are not thrilled on the outside. Of course, this is on the outside. I bet, somewhere they are dancing for joy, because someone is talking about their show. When Rock was announced as host this year, there were several stories wondering why they would choose such as controversial figure. Rock is better known for his HBO comedy specials and rants about race and culture than a string of movie failures, but he's also hosted MTV's Video Music Awards, and seems well-suited for that task.

Well, this week we see exactly why Rock was hired. Rock drives publicity. Rock makes statements that drive interest to the program, and he can build an audience that isn't the so-called normal one for the show. Look at Rock's core audience, young males, the dream network demographic. This, as Rock points out in his comment, is not what Oscar, or the Grammys, or the Tonys or any other mainstream award show brings in. Sure, you'd never bring in Dave Chappelle or Snoop Dogg to host the Oscars, they might do a turn at the Video Game awards, but Rock has enough high-brow cred to walk the line between the two worlds.

It doesn't hurt that Rock is African-American, either, though he might actually not be so politically correct as I am, in labeling him.

Of course, we have Matt Drudge, who already has something against Rock from earlier movies, decides to fan the flames of homophobia when Rocks comments seem rather innocuous, really. Wow, gays like the Oscars. Next you'll tell us that Jews run Hollywood. Tell us something new. Seems like Druge is just going to end up creating more interest as people end up watching the show just to see what outrageous things Rock will say and do on the air.

Rock is smarter than that, though. He knows the media. He knows what he's saying. He's polished.

and he's going to be more interesting than Billy Crystal.
