Rants

Oh it's a working Saturday! Oh the joy. Of course it's my little secret that they forgot to schedule me for the one later in the year...somehow my name was forgotten... :-)

I just wanted to do some short takes on some forgotten rants...

Star Trek: Enterprise has finally been cancelled. I wasn't surprised. When it was renewed last year, it was renewed with that feeling of A) UPN has little on anyway, what does it matter, and B) Wrap up your story and make enough episodes to make a decent syndication package. Most shows syndicate well when they hit 100 episodes. Enterprise will squeak in with 98. I'm surprised that they just don't throw them a bone and give them an extra two-parter to make a nice round number.

Enterprise seemed doomed at the start. Revisionist history with bland characters. Trying to capture the original series gusto with the touchy-feely TNG tinge. Not a good mix. They were always hampered by having to fit into the Star Trek chronology and having the rabid fans watching every little continuity mistake. It made it difficult to attract new fans, and demonized by the old ones. Then again, and new Star Trek show has this problem.

After Star Trek: Nemesis, an almost exact retelling of Wrath of Kahn, and the end of Voyager, it was already time to give the franchise a rest. Fan fiction has been better than Enterprise.

Still, the last few episodes of Enterprise, where they already seemed to know they were cancelled and have been going for broke, trying to fill in the gaps of Trek history, have been mildly interesting. Especially the Vulcan High Command as Bush, Rumsfeld and company story arc they did, keeping the enlightened Vulcans as we know them at bay.

I think they knew it's all for broke now.

Otherwise, The President gave his state of the Union this week, and i didn't watch. It's dull TV. You can tell he needs a lot of support for a controversial agenda, since he's still having to pander to the religious right. After throwing up a trial balloon that he would stop pushing for the Federal Marriage amendment, he goes and puts it back on the table, and yet says that we must be compassionate to all in America. Your message seems very muddled, Mr. President.

What really disturbs me is the amount of effort that is being made by the Baby boomer generation to try to grab as much power, wealth and means for themselves right now, and to hell with any other group. It's interesting that that generation pretended to be so idyllic and caring, wanting to change the world, but what it's always been about is themselves. They wanted peace, but peace was only to stop them from having to go to war. War's OK now, if it keeps the terrorists at bay, you can send the younger generations off, as long as they aren't my kids. They wanted social programs, but only when it wasn't their paycheck being eaten up by the tax bill to pay for it.

Now they want to make sure that Social Security is within their grasp, but who cares, really as long as they get their benefits. Bush even made sure to mention that the Boomer generation was driving most of the changes, to the deference of others.

When will some of these people start dying off, dang it!

I'm sure I had more, but I'll have to save it for later...
