Civic Duty
Oct. 25th, 2004 10:02 amIt's already turning into a weird day.
Not that I didn't know it would be. Jury duty takes you out of the norm, but I had an 80 year-old woman ask me "What is blogging?" as she stamped my voter registration card.
Yes, I am wearing that shirt, and no, it hasn't done me any favors yet.
I got to the Crighton Theater late. They put the jury pool there, as it's the largest area to do so downtown. It was odd being there. In my high school days I did a few plays there, and there's still a couple of cast pictures of me on the walls. They swore us in, and we waited, and waited, and waited.
This was all to sort us. They drop the big Sorting Hat of Justice on us and tell us what court they will send us to. I've been picked for this a few times before, and they used to just send you directly to the cort. No more. Now you are sorted, and the hat has chosen for me, Olen Underwood!
You know you're still dealing with some backwoods areas when you still have a justice named Olen.
The bad thing is, his court doesn't convene until 1:00, so I'm actually typing this entry on my dad's computer (guaranteed to have 25% more spelling mistakes). Please don't post porn picture to LJ this morning. Mom's around!
So, in between the sorting hat, and coming home, I went over to the election commission to vote, but before I could get my voter's registration card out of the car, a lady fell and broke open her face in the parking lot. I didn't bring in my cell phone into the theater, but someone else did. we helped her and called for an ambulance to come get here, and luckily a paramedic was also in the jury pool, and could help her. I really felt pretty helpless, but it wasn't that i walked by and did nothing.
I went and voted. There was a line. Mostly elderly people who would have a Monday morning off, no surprise there. I'm pretty sure I was the only one voting for Kerry, a conclusion I came to a couple of weeks ago, since it was between him and the Libertarian candidate. I'm just hoping Kerry could take the national popular vote, if nothing else. Certainly Texas will remain in the Bush column. The poll volunteer worker did ask me about blogging, because her grandkids had talked about it.
So, here I wait. And wait... I guess it beats working.
