Love's better the second time around
May. 30th, 2003 09:12 amFirst, happy birthday to Jaime
supercub. such a nice, fun guy!
I'll be heading up to Dallas tonight, staying at my sisters. tomorrow morning, we have to get up early and head to Abilene for my cousin's wedding. Tracey is somewhere around 25 and this is her first wedding. She's marring Zach, who's dated her through high school and into college.
Here's a funny thing about my family. I'm surrounded by girls. All my cousins are women. Tracey's the youngest. On my father's side, my uncle Brian has two girls, Tammy, who's around 43, and My fundamentalist, prayer-missle-ing cousin Ellen, who's 36. On my mother's side, Aunt Suzanne had two daughters, Shannon who's the free-spirit liberal at 29, and Tracey.
So except for Tracey, they have all been married before. All three of them have divorced. Hell, Ellen lived with the guy for two years and they never even consummated the marriage. Ellen and Tammy have been remarried, and seem to be doing well. Ellen's new husband is a asshole, though. Shannon ran off with another man, we'll see what comes out of that. The track record speaks for itself.
I'm sorry Tracey, you're doomed.
Laura's a bit concerned about this. This leaves her as the unmarried one. (obviously the one boy in the group doesn't count). Laura has Ed, and they have a pretty solid relationship, but I'm not sure if they are really looking at marriage. They've lived together for the last four years. They still have separate finances, mainly since Ed is going back to school this summer.
I really don't care about this wedding. I should probably wait for the next one. It has more potential! I'm going to spend some good, quality time with Laura. We really have been in such a whirlwind in our lives, it will be nice to have 10 hours - there and back, just to ourselves.
Weddings can be good and bad. I like being in them. Being best man is very, very cool. I still get chills about standing next to my buddies, watching as they take the big step. There's something intriguing about that commitment, to that bond. Sure, I've been to weddings where you knew that wasn't there. You could tell that they were going through the motions, and that the relationship they think they have isn't there.
Marriage. Do I envision myself running off to Vermont someday and getting hitched? I don't know. it doesn't seem important at all right now. I think you can do just fine without the title. The ceremony... I think it's great if you really want to share with others what you have. It can be really beautiful. Will I ever get to that point? That's where the speculation begins.
I don't have anything close to a relationship right now. I have some crushes that are kind of high and low, and I do have to admit I had dinner with Dave last night. Nothing special, just dinner. I'll save marriage for another time.
I'll watch Tracey run down the aisle this weekend. I bet you I'll yawn.
