Something to Thank Screaming Amy For
Nov. 28th, 2003 10:46 amFirst, I've been getting bad with the birthday greeting, but I do know to send happy greetings to
fauxbear and
suominorgebear!
Yesterday, I called into Larry's radio show, since poor Larry had to work, and I called in to talk about my mother's famous all-microwaved Thanksgiving feasts. Yes, she has everything planned out so she can have it all microwaved. Still, I was kind of looking forward to her actually cooking something.
I really didn't have much to do yesterday. Since my Dad was working the night shift this week, we'd agreed to a late start, so lunch/dinner would be at 4 or so. I hung around my apartment for a while, chatting, watching the parade and taking a long soak in the tub, reading comics.
About one o'clock Screaming Amy calls saying that she's not doing anything, and she had today off. She and her new husband didn't have any plans, so she offered to work my shift today. I stated that I was scheduled to bring breakfast for the team and they might be disappointed, but she said it would be alright. She knew that I'd be trying to leave work as fast as I could after my shift so I could get to Dallas.
After thinking it over, I called her back and said, hey, let's do this. I started packing and laying out my plan. It was so cool that Amy would do this for me.
Luckily, the parent's house is on the way. I got to the house and found that my mom hadn't cooked anything. There was no food there. Mom had decided that we would just go out to Steak and Ale. I was very unhappy about this, and I could tell that my dad was disappointed in her too.
Funny moment of conversation at dinner, amongst the other dysfunctional families at the restaurant, Mom talks about a old neighbor she saw recently and their son who has moved to New York City. She goes to say that he's living in the Village and I just roll my eyes in front of Dad...and he gets this indescribable look on his face. I almost laughed out loud! actually, I think Mom totally missed it.
So I drop Mom off around 6:30, telling he I have to work early and I need to go home, and I jump onto the freeway towards Dallas. There was more traffic than usual, and lots of slow, tryptophan -loaded drivers out on the road. Once I reached downtown Dallas I called Chris (
oakleycub) to see where he was, to surprise him. I made it sound like one of our usual talks - what are you doing? etc.
I pulled up around back (about 10:00) and parked, and then came over to the door, ringing the bell. Chris opens the door, all surprised, since he didn't expect me until later today. The crowd that was in the house was also surprised! I really enjoyed doing that, and Chris gave me a big, long kiss that everyone watched. I kept waiting for the "get a room" comment to pop up.
There was still some remnants of a very large Thanksgiving dinner, turkey, ham, cornbread...all the things that I wish my mother had cooked. Note, next year, I'll try to be here.
So people settled in, out of all of the people around, the LJ'ers included Skye (
cristalskye), Matty (
mattycub), Travis (
verucacub), Sean (
schnitz_mi), and Jason (
spintobear) who came in from doing something else. I also met Randy (
rooooo), who's one of those people that when you meet, you go, "why isn't he on my friends list?" Consider that rectified.
We watched Down With Love which I totally love, and then worked on cleaning up. We hopped into bed around two, and had to get up so Chris could go to work this morning. He put on a tight minty blue-green shirt an I said, "You know that makes you look gay." Chris chirps back, "The name tag saying Restoration Hardware makes me look gay." I had to agree. Off he went to work, and now those of us who are off today, Randy, Sean and I are just starting to figure out what we'll do today.
Here's to unexpected days off!
