You Got to Dance With Them What Brung You
Jan. 31st, 2007 11:37 pmI didn't always agree with her, but boy could she make you laugh. And think. She could give you one of those "Texas" phrases like "The President of the United States does not have the sense God gave a duck -- so it's up to us. You and me, Bubba," and still seem like a smart, intelligent person...since it wasn't only used for effect, but also to reach across the aisle. She was a liberal - and not ashamed of it - talking like the aforementioned Bubba.
Molly Ivins will be missed - well, not by the White House, but certainly by those who love good political discourse, and just dammed good writing. I certainly wish that I could write as well as she has.
As others have pointed out, Molly is much like former Texas Governor Ann Richards who sucumbed to cancer last year. Both represented a strong, independent and outspoken Texas woman and the tail end of what was a very strong Democratic Party in the state. Unfortunately those in power now like a more meek, quiet woman like our current first lady. Those are southern bells, not Texas women. Personally I'd like to see more of Ms. Ivins and her ilk, and fewer bubble headed blonds passing for journalists.
