I just spent a nice evening over dinner with Jerry ([livejournal.com profile] goofycubb) and his new beau shane, and a few friends at Barnaby's. it was a good time as everyone was glib and funny, and the food was good as usual. I felt a little off at first meeting everyone when I was a little sweaty after coming off the front nine.

Yep, golf, again. As Lisa leaves tomorrow (thank god) she worked it out with her bosses the we could go out for golf again, and while I considered not doing it, I decided to keep team unity and do something that was certainly more exercise than I normally get, and since several people were going to leave after nine, I could certainly do the same. Of course, I prayed for rain, but strangely this week its gone away.

Strangely, I actually did better this time than last week one reason is that we played an easier course (Houston's Hermann Park) that didn't have a huge bayou flowing through it, where many of my balls went for a watery death. the second one was that I was paired up with Marvin and dominick who actually played closer to my level, so my confidence rose.

At first we were stuck behind Lisa's foursome that featured Melissa, the new player who didn't know what she was doing. I was grueling to watch and wait for her to take her swings that dribbled off once she finally hit it. And to think Morgan was telling us not to take a lot of swings, at least we connected with the ball. But they read the course wrong and ended up going off to another hole, throwing off their sequence, and we kept playing on.

We played best ball again, mainly to keep up on speed. After a bit we had a guy who could make 300 yard drives waiting behind us who kept us trying to move quickly, but still we averages about one or two over par on each hole. It was also was a lot warmer out since we didn't have the deluge of rain prior to our tee time like we did two weeks ago.

So would I ever take up the sport? Maybe. Hans now is needing me to get him up to speed, but I know that I can't teach him to play he'll have to do that himself or take lessons. I wouldn't mind doing it occasionally if I didn't feel rushed into having to push forward so quickly. Still, a real problem continues to be the expense, and if it wasn't for the great borrowed clubs I had today (including the great "Nancy Lopez" model wood I had -Why does JC have that?) i probably would have said no since the rental clubs make it even more pricey. I haven't priced Target clubs.

Still, I had fun, and it was challenging. When that stops, it will be over. Chris can have his softball, I'll take golf! :-)

Oh, on another story. I'm wondering when the Boy Scouts went to crap? I guess when the gays were kicked out.

At the Boy Scout Jamboree the other day four leaders were trying to put up a tent and were killed when a tent pole hit a power line they didn't notice. Heck, don't they watch those commercials with the "light-bulb fly" talking about don't play around power lines?

Then, over 300 of the young scouts have been dropping from the heat wave that's been hitting the US. The government land that the scouts are on (wait a minute...) is in Virginia, close to Washington and the scouts were waiting an appearance by President Bush. Bush was scheduled to be there anyway, but was going to work the stop to be a memorial for the scout leaders, but Bush was lated, leaving the scouts to wilt in the heat. Bush then rescheduled for Sunday.

Now I was a Cub Scout (a Bear, even) and then a Webelo, but when I joined the Boy Scouts and started to deal with the camping I knew I had enough of that junk. Heck, with the Cub Scouts most of the parents did most of the work anyway. my Dad did everything with my Pinewood Derby car but paint it.

Still, Wasn't the Boy Scout motto "Be Prepared"? Whatever happened to that?

Lastly, a little Houston Metro Rail update. I haven't covered the crashes in a while. The light rail hit a pedestrian today bringing the total of the year and a half old rail line at 104.
