Chicago III: Cubs Lose, Cubs Lose!
Jul. 25th, 2003 12:15 pmStill, Chicago remains to be a fantastic city. I wanted to ask why it took so long to get here, but now I know that I really couldn't appreciate this city as much until now. Serendipity, Cosmic Fate, Whatever, now was the right time to be here.
The difference between last-years eye-opening trip to Montreal and this year's trip to Chicago is both with in me, and without, as I look at the people surrounding me in this trip. Last year I went on vacation alone. I was not quite out to myself, or the community, but I was just starting to get comfortable for what was to come. I looked at the Village in Montreal as a challenge, and as a place of mystery, though it's very open, to me it was still dark and foreboding.
Chicago is, well, not a full 180, but certainly a big difference. here I am with friends, I'm meeting people and seeing the sights and feeling like this is home, in a way. I feel very comfortable here (not too unlike I feel in Dallas). Traveling through Boystown to get to Wrigley Field yesterday felt right. I felt as if I belonged there, as if this is my community, even as I'm unsure of exactly my place within it.
John (
blithwulf) will tell you that once I reached Wrigley yesterday I was positively giddy. I couldn't believe that I had finally made it to the Friendly Confines. The ivy, the brick, the fans (the game was sold out), the great seats, feeling comfortable with your friend in the next seat that you didn't have a problem sitting next to him in the close contact. Of course, the most traditional Cubs experience, the Cubs lost, 14-6. Shania Twain threw out the first pitch and sung "Take me out to the Ballgame."
It was John's first baseball game as well. I was worried that he wouldn't enjoy it, but he did.
Afterwards we rested, finally met John's other roommate Lee (
tironsshadow)had dinner at chili's with Shawn (
ombraorsa) then stayed up late having coffee with Colin (
kubshadow) who's really cool. We made it home at 4 am.
Today, Oak Park, looking at Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, followed by a ride on the El (finally) down to see the Hancock tower at night, and out to Navy Pier. Then we're likely to hit Charlies and the Cell Block, and we'll then see if I really do feel at home here in Chicago.
Really, we're getting to just about everything I wanted to do here in town, but I'm going to hate to go home and back to work. It seems like time is growing short and I'm getting frantic. I'm going to need a vacation from my vacation (I know that Chris (
oakleycub) is already planning that).
I do have some free time tomorrow I'm finding, as John needs to get some tasks done that he's been putting off, anyone in town want to do lunch? Show me the town?
"My Kind of Town...Chicago is..."
