In order to avoid another "god I hate work" post:

One thing I love is a good story. Interest, Intriuge and/or a good sense of humor will hook me quick. I tend to read a lot, news, comics, magazines and now, Live Journal. Obviously this fits right in.

The story doesn't even have to be your own, but you have to have some sense of the feeling, the emotion behind it. Comic Book writers aren't generally flying from building to building or smashing cars into supervillans, but the best understand their characters feelings and emotions.

Naturally, I'm entertained by the storyteller. I'm a listener, it takes a certain familliarity for me to open up to someone and tell them my stories. I'm more likely-if we're in conversation mode-to learn a lot more about you, than you will about me. I love learning about someone through their communication and speech. Local phrases and patterns facinate me. I remember Craig, a fraternity brother from New Hampshire when he came to UH and kept using "Wicked Awesome". Had me in stitches.

Perhaps that expresses my current boredom with reality television. It was interesting early on, but now all the stories are boring, and overdone. How many more "Real Worlds" do we need? There's an art to storytelling there, too. Fear Factor doesn't have it. Lately, only the Amazing Race has kept my attention, if you could find it.

Music is yet another form of storytelling. Allthough I'm not into opera (since that subject came up, [livejournal.com profile] cristalskye), I can see the appeal. Lyrics are a big part of my like or dislike of the song. this is why I still love the Beatles, Billy Joel and Elton John. Now I love Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds and Coldplay. Emotional lyrics stick with me, and become me.

Back to storytelling. You wish to hold my attention? Make the story fun and interesting. Make it colorful and thought-provoking. Simile, metaphor, the odd reference. It doesn't have to be long or short. Just don't be dull.

So, can I tell a story, you ask? I can, but it may be a while before you get it out of me.

I just use to many words.
