Celebrating
Jan. 1st, 2003 02:05 pmFlipping between VH1's "I love the '80s", The Rose Parade and the Texas - LSU game.
Last night, after I finally got out of work at 7 (damn it!) I got some dinner and decided to go to the small gathering Jerome had invited me to, and then wind up at the Blands for the toast at midnight.
Jerome's a co-worker at work. He and is husband live in a townhouse in the center of the city. I hadn't been to their place before. Jerome's thin and does the whole "I'm working out because I have to stay thin and attractive" thing. Still, it sounded like it would be a small gathering, and I can get along with Jerome and Brian.
Every guy who thinks he's a twink was there (so it seems).
I drop in and immediately everyone looks at me (Oh, there's a bear in the house." "Look at his gut - eeew"). Obviously this wasn't going to help my ego, but I'd do what I could. As I was being introduced around by Jerome, this conversation takes place:
Aging Twink: Can I get anything to drink for you?
Me: (thinking "beer" but guessing they wouldn't have it) Jack and Coke.
AT: What?
Me: Jack and Coke.
AT: Oh. I'll have to see if we have that. Would you like a Cosmo instead?
Me: No.
I ended up spending much of the time I was there (about an hour and a half) in a corner just watching everyone else. It wasn't so much that I was miserable, but I didn't have much fun. Too much flitting about by guys trying to be something they weren't (at least to me)...sexy or interesting.
I disappeared from Jerome's and went to be with John and Dawn Bland - much more like a second family to me. Just a nice comfortable feeling. Like bringing in the new year at home.
Still, I got out, and did something in the community - given my shyness, this was a plus. hopefully at the end of the year I can be with some guys I really enjoy being with. I wish John T wasn't in Colorado. That would be a start.
Here's to a great new year. I wish you all the best.
